Dear Sir/Madam,
Statistics Canada Alberta 2017 Fact: 800 Million Dollars was spent on 8000 Seniors waiting in Alberta hospitals for an average of 51 days at approx. $2000/day. These costs for 2018 will be higher due to increases in our aging population.
These same seniors with high personal care needs could have been funded for personal care at average of $2000/month and live safely within the community for a savings of $792 Million Dollars.
Most of these seniors are prematurely placed in Long Term Care/ Auxiliary hospitals where the public cost is more than $9000/month.
Providing equitable personal care funding for Seniors so they can live safely within the community is not a “want” its a “need” as 88,000 Seniors are currently forced to pay out of pocket for their own personal care.
The personal care funding model is already at work for persons with developmental disabilities who live safely within our communities. Why are seniors with age related disabilities treated with less respect for choice and dignity?
Please fund seniors equitably based on their assessed needs regardless of where they choose to live.
Sincerely,
