  • Join the James River Association for a guided canoe program on the James River. Participants will explore Richmond's riverfront and learn about natural and historic resources of the James River.

    In the event a paddle is cancelled due to inclement weather, James River Association staff will make an effort to reschedule it and participants will be notified by email.  Registration fees are considered donations to the James River Association and are not eligible for refund.

  • Essential Eligibility Criteria

    Paddling activities are open to all participants who satisfy the following Essential Eligibility Criteria:

    • Each participant must be 16 years or older.
    • Each participant must be able to manage all personal care and mobility independently or with the assistance of a companion who accompanies them.
    • Equipment: Participants must wear a personal floatation device (PFD) and other required safety equipment.
    • Entering and exiting: Participants must be able to enter and exit the canoe or kayak independently or with the assistance of a companion or staff member.
    • Seating: Participants must be able to remain seated and balanced, using adaptive support if necessary.
    • Paddling: Kayakers must have the ability to move their kayak through the water in a stable manner and take it to the designated landing area. At least one person in a canoe must have the ability to move it through the water in a stable manner and take it to the designated landing area.
    • Safety: In the event of a capsize, canoeists and kayakers must have:
      • The ability to get out independently from under the paddlecraft.
      • The ability to right oneself, remain faceup in the water with the aid of a PFD, and make progress to the shoreline.
    • Each participant must be comfortable in the water including floating on his or her back independently with a properly fitted PFD, turning from facedown to faceup independently while wearing a properly fitted PFD, and holding his or her breath while under water.
    • Each participant must possess the ability to paddle two (2) miles on flat water.
    • Each participant must have the ability to follow paddle instructions given by the trip leader.
  • Release And Waiver of Liability

    RELEASE AND WAIVER OF LIABILITY, ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND INDEMNITY AND PARENTAL CONSENT AGREEMENT ("AGREEMENT").

    In consideration of participating in the interpretive paddle at  I represent that I understand the nature of this event and that I and/or my minor child am qualified, in good health, and proper physical condition to participate in such an activity. I acknowledge that if I and/or my minor child believe event conditions are unsafe I and/or my minor child will immediately discontinue participation in the Activity. I fully understand that this event involve risks of serious bodily injury, including permanent disability, paralysis, and death, which may be caused by my own actions or inactions, those of others participating in the event, the conditions in which the event takes place, or the negligence of the "releases" named below; and I fully accept and assume all such risks and all responsibility for losses, costs, and damages I and/or my minor child incur as a result of my and/or my minor child's participation in the Activity. I hereby release, discharge, and covenant not to sue the James River Association, event sponsor sites, event sponsors, respective administrations, directors, agents, officers, volunteers, employees, other participants, any advisors and if applicable, owners and lessors of premises on which the Activity takes place (each considered one of the "releases" herein), from all liability, claims, demands, losses or damages on my account and/or that of my minor child caused or alleged to be caused in whole or in part by the negligence of the "releases" or otherwise, including negligent rescue operations; and I further agree that if, despite the release, waiver of liability, and assumption of risk, I, or anyone on my/and or my minor child's behalf makes a claim against any of the "Releases", I will indemnify, save and hold harmless each of the releases from any loss, liability, damage or cost which any may incur as the result of such claim.

    I have read this RELEASE AND WAIVER OF LIABILITY, ASSUMPTION OF RISK, AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT, AND PARENTAL CONSENT AGREEMENT, understand that I have given up substantial rights by signing it and have signed it freely and without any inducement or assurance of any nature, and intend it be a complete and unconditional release of all liability to the greatest extend allowed by law and agree that any portion of this agreement is held to be invalid the balance, notwithstanding, shall continue in full force and effect. Further, by signing this waiver, I am acknowledging that the James River Association DOES NOT provide any medical coverage or payments for myself or my minor child in the event of injury or death. I give permission to authorized personnel to carry out such emergency diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as may be necessary for me / my child, and also permit such treatment procedures to be carried out at and by local hospital(s) for me / my child in the event of an emergency. I understand that any medical expenses will be billed directly to me or my insurance company. I hereby grant the James River Association the unconditional right to use my / my child's name, voice, and photographic likeness in connection with any audio video production, articles, website materials or press releases.
