Herb Farmer Training Course (HFTC)

The Herb Farmer Training Course in Lake Lure, NC runs 3 days a week (M-W) and most weekends from May 1 - October 31, 2018. The classes offered are designed for individuals with some level of experience working with herbs and/or growing plants.

The value of the course, designed with leading industry experts to train 10 students in everything they need to know to start their own herb farm, is over $12,000 per student. However through amazing blessings of cooperation, volunteers, donations and sponsorship each student will only pay $2500.

A LITTLE FARMING

(herbalists, if this is new to you, just let us know.)

This is a hands-on course involving organic production-scale herb cultivation. Talk about your interest and/or experience in organic production farming and medicinal herb cultivation.

Our program includes hands on organic farm work. Please describe your experience in a similar environment.

Include familiarity with Good Agricultural Practices, experience doing precise, repetitive activities for at least two hours at a time such as harvesting, chopping, garbling, pruning, hoeing, transplanting. Indicate the type of weather in which you did these activities.

A LITTLE HERBALISM

What has your herbal training been? Please list any classes, workshops, seminars, conferences, as well as self-study.

What is a memorable experience you have had with a plant?

LOGISTICS

Please disclose any physical or constitutional condition that might need to be discussed during the interview process. This includes severe periodic cramping, PMS, as well as, medicated emotional conditions including depression, ADD, PTSD and Bi-Polar disorder. Please include any known allergies as work on the farm involves working in and around a wide variety of plants and grasses.

The hands-on part of this program includes bending, stooping, squatting, digging,hoeing, hand picking, pruning, clipping, chopping, lifting, and hiking for hours at a time. Unresolved physical injuries, potentially communicable conditions, and constitutional weaknesses might limit your ability to do this work as you will be expected to participate daily in the full range of field and landscape activities.

What experience do you have living and working with others in a similar intensive arrangement; this can be an internship, AmeriCorps, school or sports, or any other situation in which you spent more than two weeks working with a group on a focused project.

Group Dynamics is a major part of this program. Our students share the work study and dreams of herb farmers. We will spend a lot of time together. We will share stories, meals, jobs, responsibilities, and generally get to know each other.

Are you able to be in Lake Lure, NC at Pangaea Plants for 3 days a week, including most weekends? Often, this will involve relocating for the duration of the program (6 months, from May 1 - October 31, 2018).

While most students will be commuting daily to the farm, if you have an interest in staying in a tent for any portion of the course, please let us know.If you need help finding accommodation while attending, also please let us know, a few local affordable options may be open.

Do you have any logistical concerns about the commitments required for participation in the Herb Farmer Training Course?

We can work with our accepted students to help make that temporary transition as easy as possible. For example, there are 5 eco-communities close to the farm for ease and affordability of housing, along with various other options. We can work out childcare if that is something you need.
