With your goals for this project in mind, we’d like you to consider what kind of coaching feedback you believe will be best for you right now. Keep in mind that our coaches offer developmental editing. A developmental editor is thinking on a bigger scale than by the line or paragraph. They are thinking about the impact of the story on the reader, the logic of it, the interior lives of the characters, the world of the story, the demands of the genre, and the flow of the argument (in nonfiction) – among other things. This is big-picture editing, big idea editing. You might hear people use the phrases “structural editing” or “substantive editing” in place of developmental editing – they’re the same thing.
Take a look at the scenarios below and select the one that most aligns with what you’re looking for from a coach.
Each of our book coaches has been hand-picked by Jennie Nash after passing a series of extensive editing tests that assess their editorial expertise, their creativity, and their ability to communicate feedback clearly and effectively, with patience and compassion. Jennie has personally trained each of them in four key editorial areas: technical proficiency, big-picture vision, commercial viability, and the realities of the writing life.
At Author Accelerator, we work hard to pair each writer with the book coach we believe will bring out their best. We'll use your responses in this questionnaire to make the match, as well as factors including schedule, deadlines, and a coach's current capacity.
If you're interested in learning a little bit about our coaches, you can meet them here.
PLEASE NOTE: The coach pages on our website aren't meant to be a stand-in for their CV of editing and writing experience. Their favorite genres, books, and authors don't necessarily speak to what they excel at editing-wise, and their interests and expertise may extend beyond what is listed on their page. We will do our best to pair writers with the right coach for their project based on all the information we have available.
We know that working with a book coach is a big investment of your time and money. We know that you want a guarantee that you’ll accomplish your goals. We know that we’re the best coaches to help you do that – but we want you to know that too.
If you're at all hesitant about joining one of our coaching programs, we'd like to give you the confidence that this is the right path for you before you make a commitment. We're offering an opportunity to get high-level feedback on your first chapter from a member of our coaching team, and their advice on how to move your project forward. No strings attached. Once you receive our assessment and get a taste of our coaching method, you can decide whether you’d like to join our coaching program. This is not required; it's just an option.
Please note that assessments may take up to 4 weeks and are prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis. If you elect to get a special assessment, your coaching program will not start until the assessment is complete. The coach who completes your assessment may not be the coach you are paired with in a subsequent coaching program, however the assessment will be shared with the new coach.
Please upload the first chapter of the project you would like to work on with a coach, up to 10 pages double-spaced in 12 pt. Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins on all sides. Please put your name and email address on the pages in case they get separated from your application. Also include your first and last name the file name and remove or replace any spaces in the file name with an underscore or dash.
