• Clinical Externship Learning Objectives & Competencies

    Carefully read Part 1 of this form which identifies the general competencies in six core areas that we will be using as our benchmark for establishing educational goals. All sites must meet these learning objectives and competencies.

  • Knowledge-Related Competencies

    1) Demonstrate the ability to apply the knowledge of biomedicine & vision science to patient care through patient experiences.

    2) Demonstrate the ability to implement strategies for disease prevention, and improve health outcomes for patients and diverse populations.

  • Skill-Related Competencies

    3) Demonstrate proficiency in the performance of a complete, systematic, patient centered eye examination using pertinent clinical reasoning skills.

    4) Demonstrate proficiency in formulating an accurate patient assessment, and in developing a prioritized differential diagnosis, while recognizing a patient who requires urgent evaluation and treatment.

    5) Demonstrate the ability to select and interpret diagnostic testing, and apply clinical problem solving to provide safe, value-based treatment plans.

    6) Demonstrate the ability to participate as an integral member of an inter-professional team to assure optimal patient care. 

    7) Demonstrate the ability to form clinical questions, identify and evaluate appropriate information resources, and apply evidence-based principles for improved patient outcomes.

  • Professional Behavior

    8) Demonstrate a positive attitude and regard for optometric education by demonstrating universal attendance, punctuality, intellectual curiosity, initiative, adherence to ethical principles, responsibility, dedication to being prepared, maturity in soliciting, accepting, and acting on feedback, and sensitivity to diversity.

  • Communication Skills

    9) Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills with patients, families, colleagues, staff, and attending supervisors.

  • Practice-Based Learning and Improvement

    10) Demonstrate the ability to critically appraise one’s own quality of patient care, and to incorporate new knowledge, evidence and experience into optometric practice.

  • Systems-Based Practice

    11) Demonstrate proficiency in practicing evidence-based and cost-effective optometric care, while advocating for patients within the context of the health care system.
