It is our expectation that CIS technology resources are to be used in a reasonable, ethical, and legal manner in accordance with the mission and values of Columbia Independent School.
This policy applies to all technology resources including, but not limited to, computers, tablet computers, phones, video equipment, copy machines and information devices. The use of these resources is a privilege and carries with it certain responsibilities. All technology resources are to be used for educational purposes and with good manners. Any user who violates this policy, or any applicable local, state, or federal laws, faces the loss of technology privileges, risks school disciplinary action, and may face legal prosecution.
Best Practices
CIS students will use technology resources in support of education.
Research must be consistent with CIS’s mission, policies, assignments, and activities. Save all files directly to the CIS cloud network. Check your email for important announcements, homework assignments, and instructions every day before 8:30 a.m. When in doubt, ask school personnel first! Instant messaging, gaming, social media, and YouTube are prohibited during instructional time.
Technology Acceptable Use Policy and Agreement for Middle/Upper School
Do not use the still camera, video camera, or audio recording capabilities of your school device or any other device without consent of school personnel. Do not waste network resources by downloading large files, hosting or joining a multiplayer game session, or by sending mass or chain emails. All other devices should be turned off during instructional time. Students will only use the “Students” wireless network. Any other wireless network is unauthorized on campus. Students may not remove apps or content provided by the school. In the event personal content prevents school apps from installation, that content will need to be removed.
Caring for your Device
CIS students will care for their device in a responsible manner.
Make sure your device is fully charged when you arrive at school. Keep all food and drink away from the device. All school-owned devices should be put away during lunchtime. When the device is not in use or is being transported, it must remain in its case. Use care when carrying in back packs; do not stack books or other items on the device. If your device is damaged or malfunctioning, take it to Mr. Beckett in Room 105 before school, during Pride, during lunch, or after school, or with a teacher’s permission during school.
Internet Etiquette
CIS students will abide by generally accepted rules of Internet etiquette.
Vulgar, obscene, or threatening language or material is prohibited. No mean, insulting, embarrassing, or derogatory statements may be sent or communicated at any time. Behavior on social media that violates the standards and expectations for CIS students, whether conducted during or outside of school hours, may face disciplinary action.
Security
CIS students will guard their identity, user accounts, electronic devices, and accessories.
Your device MUST be in your possession or in your locker at all times. Do not reveal your password to anyone. Do not allow others to use your account, device, or accessories. Do not reveal or send any personal information about yourself to others. Devices are allowed in the cafeteria during lunchtime, only after food and drink are removed from table. If your device is missing, report it immediately to your division director. Do not bypass the school web filter under any circumstances. Do not communicate to others methods of bypassing or hacking the web filter.
CIS Systems Accounts
CIS will require the use of the following types of access accounts:
Google Apps for Education access for email, calendars, and file storage. Wireless network ID and password for access to CIS network. Students will also have access to Achieve for viewing their academic progress.
Legal Issues
CIS students will handle technology resources in a responsible, ethical, and legal manner.
Unauthorized or illegal use of copyrighted material is prohibited. Use for any commercial activity is prohibited. Never hide or tamper with another person’s equipment, even as a “joke.” Do not use another individual’s account, device, or accessories. Any hardware or software used to bypass or interfere with network security is prohibited. Changing/hacking the CIS network or administrator passwords is prohibited. Vandalism and harassment are prohibited. See below.
Definition of Vandalism
Any intentional or careless attempt to damage, harm, or destroy data of another user or any hardware or equipment; any intentional or careless attempt to disrupt the Internet or other networks by installing or copying any program or introducing a virus to any technology resource; any attempt to access, delete, move, or alter another’s files without permission.
Definition of Harassment
The persistent annoyance of another user or the interference in another user’s work. This includes, but is not limited to, sending unwanted emails, mass or inappropriate emails, posting anonymous messages, forging email messages and creating false social media sites in another person’s name.
CIS has the right to restrict or terminate network and Internet access at any time for any reason. There will be no refund of tuition or technology fees if CIS determines it is in the best interest of the school to terminate or restrict a student’s access. CIS also has the right to monitor network activities, student files, and student email in any form that it sees fit to maintain the safety and confidentiality of the school’s technology resources and to enforce the provisions of this policy.
Parent/Guardian Technology Agreement
I have read the above Columbia Independent School Technology Usage policy and procedure. I understand that violation of these provisions may result in disciplinary action taken against my child including, but not limited to, suspension or revocation of my child’s access to school technology and suspension or expulsion from school.
I understand that my child’s use of the school’s technology resources is not private and that the school may monitor my child’s electronic communications and all other use of school technology resources. I consent to school interception of or access to all of my child’s electronic communications using school technology resources as well as downloaded material and all data stored on the school’s technology resources, including deleted files, pursuant to state and federal law, even if the school’s technology resources are accessed remotely.
I agree to be responsible for any unauthorized costs arising from use of the school’s technology resources by my child. I agree to be responsible for any damages to the equipment, including the device, incurred by my child.
As a parent, I insist upon my authority in my residence to restrict access on the device beyond that described in the Technology Acceptable Use Policy.
CIS will provide content filtering on school-supplied devices that will work inside and outside of school networks. All other devices while on the CIS student and guest networks will be filtered as well.
