LANDING is an experiment in transition, pedagogy, research, mentorship, and possibility.
Once a month over six months, a selected group of dance artists meet with each other, Gutierrez, and a variety of extraordinary guest artists in the context of a recurring weekend-long workshop intensive. They learn about each other’s processes and experiment with different ways of being together using strategies derived from dance and performance.
The goal of LANDING is to create a network of experiences that addresses and supports the interests and challenges that face dance and performance artists either newly arrived to New York, or those who crave a community learning context for better navigation through the current dance and performance landscape. The various emphases of LANDING are creating community, valuing experimentation in the creative process, making a space for critical inquiry, generating practical and administrative skills in order to survive financially, prioritizing self-care in order to prevent burnout, and activating a conversation about the cultural, social, and political value of dance and performance work in today’s world. The guest artist visits are intimate learning experiences that lay out a wide array of approaches to living and working as an artist.
In its decidedly non-academic, non-hierarchical and non-evaluative approach, LANDING becomes a room where people are seen and respected in their specific individuality and are encouraged to bring that specificity into the group. LANDING taps into the critical need that artists have to come together and create meaningful personal and working relationships.
