  • Official Rules for Water Balloon Volleyball

            Equipment:

    • Use “water bomb” type balloons (NOT large or helium quality).  Balloons should be about the size of a baseball when full of water.

      Teams:

    • Teams are made up of 6 people (playing in pairs, using one towel between each pair).  ADULTS MAY NOT PLAY – Students only!
    • Middle Schoolers and High Schoolers may form teams together

      Play:

    • Play is similar to regular volleyball, with a few exceptions.
    • One team serves (launches) the balloon from the back line and the opposing team must catch and return it.
    • Teams may position themselves (pairs) anywhere within the boundaries.
    • Pairs must rotate after each change of possession, as in regular volleyball.
    • Teams may “pass” the balloon among themselves before returning it but are not required to do so.
    • If the balloon touches the net on a serve, the serve then goes to the opposing team, but no points are awarded.
    • If the balloon goes through the net, or gets caught in the net, it is a point for the opposing team.
    • A balloon may touch and clear the net during a volley, but not on a serve.
    • A balloon that goes through the net is a point for the opposing team.
    • A balloon that breaks apart inside the towel while attempting to launch will result in a do-over.
    • Balloons that land on the line are considered in-bounds.

      Scoring:

    • There will be 10 balloons per game. Team with the highest point total wins.
    • Rally scoring: A team does not have to serve the balloon in order to receive a point.  A team is awarded a point when the balloon rolls off the opposing team's towel, is missed, or if the return volley does not clear the net.
    • Balloon does not have to break in order for a point to be scored.
    • If the team that served the balloon drops it during a volley, the serve goes to the opposing team and the opposing team also receives a point.
    • If the water balloon breaks when it lands inside the towel (as if it were caught) no points are awarded. The team that launched the balloon receives a new balloon for a re-do. Note: This replacement balloon does not count against the 10-balloon allotment.
    • Hands cannot be used to catch a balloon or to keep it from rolling off the towel. If this occurs, it is a penalty resulting in a point for the opposing team.
    • The last balloon is a “grace” balloon and it is worth 3 points.
    • Points are awarded regardless of which team serves the grace balloon.

      Tournament:

    • Teams play each other in single elimination, beginning on Tuesday night. If there are 4 teams or less, single elimination would be better.
    • Games are played on Tuesday and Wednesday nights after dinner. Final two teams should compete on Thursday night after dinner with the winner playing the staff just for fun.
    • After each game, teams must pick up broken balloons before the next game begins.
    • No games between staff and adults are permitted.
  • Games:

You may be asked to assist the PD with leading the games and activites for evening program during your week.
