  • Request for Provost Reinvestment Funds

  • The Provost Reinvestment Fund (PRF) was adopted concurrently with the implementation of Activity Based Budgeting (ABB) in FY13. PRF is primarily comprised of formulaic allocations of tuition revenues, indirect cost recovery, and institutional overhead. Under ABB, these revenue streams are allocated directly to the unit responsible for the activity; but first, a tax is taken to fund central administrative operations, strategic investments in student and faculty experience, and critical compliance efforts—shared expenses that would otherwise have no direct source of funds. The tax is part of the funds that the administration uses to address the President’s and Provost’s priorities for the University. Deployment of these funds is the result of a lengthy and highly consultative budget development cycle. Off-cycle funding requests are considered and reviewed on a monthly basis.

    Instructions: Please complete the fields below and attach any relevent material to support your request (as applicable). 

    In almost all circumstances, units will be required to self fund new requests for permanent funds under $100,000 and temporary requests under $300,000. Exceptions will be made for expenses that are sensitive in nature, or related to start-up and matching commitments historically funded centrally. 

    Each request should be accompanied by a matching component from the requesting unit and align with a long-term strategic goal of the unit or the UW, on whole. Please note, adherence to these thresholds and matching are not a requirement of ABB Values Based Pool fund requests.

    In general, please:

    • Complete each field and attach any relevent material to support your request (as applicable).
    • Avoid jargon and spell out all acronyms.
    • Utilize bullet points rather than extensive prose.

  • Request Cycle Information

    Fund requests fall into two possible cycles, the Annual Review Process cycle (i.e. annual budget development process) or Outside of the Annual Review Process cycle (i.e. Off Cycle request). Please select the appropriate cycle, below. 

    • Annual Review Process cycle requests are reviewed during the March to June window for funding in future fiscal years. Units requesting funding from the ABB Values Based Funding Pool should select this option.
    • Off Cycle Requests are reviewed no less frequently than monthly.
    • Emergency  requests are for items that urgently require a funding decision. These should only be submitted for funding in support of an emergent event or opportunity that would have been impossible to plan for and a funding decision (yes/no) is a top priority for the requesting unit.

    In 500 words or fewer, describe your request. This description should allow UW leadership and OPB to understand the nature of the request, including what is driving it and why it is important to address. Guiding Questions:

    • What problem or opportunity does this request address?
    • How does this request tie into your unit's strategic plan?
    • What the requested funding would “buy” (e.g. faculty, staff, equipment, etc.)?

    If any of the conditions below are applicable to the funding you are requesting from the Provost (i.e Total Funding Requested), please indicate as such by clicking the check box or, if applicable, entering an "other condition".

    Examples of the above "request conditions" are

    Contingent upon an action or activity- i.e. you are requesting start up funding for an open faculty recruitment, which hasn't been filled as of the date of the request. Thus, the funding request is contingent on a successful recruitment as you wouldn't otherwise require the funds for this purpose if the recruitment is unsuccessful. 

    Not to exceed -  i.e. you are pursuing a consulting contract that contains an amount not to exceed 500,000 for a defined scope of work. As the amount in this example is not fixed, you are requesting funds "up to" a certain ceiling because you're not sure that you'll need the full amount of requested funds to carry out the defined activity.


  • Unit Matching Funds Detail

    • If matching a request for permanent funds, please enter the total amount you intend to provide in support of this request during the FY22-FY29 time period.  
      ex. if you request 100,000 in incremental permanent funds beginning in FY22 (totaling 800,000 from FY22-29) and intend to match with 100,000 of your existing permanent funds beginning in FY22, you would enter 800,000 as your match (represents 8 years of 100k).  
    • If matching a request for temporary funds, please enter the total amount you will be providing in support of this request during the FY22-FY29 time period. 
      ex. if you request 3 years of temporary funding and intend to match 100,000 per year, please enter 300,000 as the matching amount funded by your unit

    Please note, matching is not a requirement of ABB Values Based Pool fund requests, but a unit may elect to indicate a match.
