Deadline: August 16, 2021 for Fall 2021, Winter 2022, and/or Spring 2022
A funding application should be submitted even if you plan to begin in absentia status in Winter or Spring. Any requests made after this deadline are subject to funding availability. Students must also submit the Graduate Division's Registration for in Absentia petition to the Anthropology Graduate Advisor by one week before the petition deadline. This online application is for funding only and will not officialy place you on in absentia status.
The Department will cover 100% of in absentia fees for up to 3 quarters or cost-share 50% of in absentia fees for up to 6 quarters with the student or Graduate Division paying the remaining 50%. The policy consists of the following:

Cost-sharing* can consist of one or a combination of the following options:
50% payment by the Department and 50% by Graduate Division, for up to 6 quarters, only if awarded a
qualifying extramural fellowship
with award period during 2021-22
50% payment by the Department and 50% by the student for up to 6 quarters
100% payment by the Department for up to 3 quarters
Students are encouraged to
waive health insurance
when possible, thus reducing the overall cost of fees.
Applicants must also not have exhausted the 3 quarters of Department funding at 100% or 6 quarters cost-share at 50% (or combination of both).
If you will receive a fellowship that will already cover your full tuition and fees and nonresident tuition (if applicable), you may choose to not submit a funding application in order to preserve the number of funded quarters.
Students approved to be registered in absentia (RIA) by the Graduate Division are assessed 15% of the tuition and student services fee. UC SHIP and the nonresident supplemental tuition (if applicable) are still assessed at full cost. Please note that the Department will only fund the following:

Nonresident tuition and dependent care UC SHIP are not covered by the Department. This funding does not provide a stipend.
Students receiving RIA funding from the Department will have up to 3 quarters of their Department fellowship (TA quarters) deferred to their 6th year as long as they have available quarters to defer and follow the deferral policy: Students must use their promised funding within six years of entry into the program. Exceptions may be considered for special circumstances.

Cost-sharing options can be mixed. For example, you may choose the Department to pay 100% for Fall, Department cost-share in Winter and Spring, then apply for funding again for 2022-23 and elect to cost-share for two more quarters or have the Department pay 100% of the
fees for one more quarter.
Students who opt to pay 50% of the fees are responsible for paying the quarterly fees on-time.

. Failure to pay those fees on time may result in - late registration fees, auto-drop of enrolled courses and charge of late study list fees to reenroll, accrual of delinquent fees, cancellation of
status, issues with F-1 or J-1 visa status, or lapse of student status.
