Code of Ethics
The goal of this Code of Ethics is to protect and preserve HIGH PLAINS P.A.W., animal rescue, adoptive families, and individual animals. High Plains P.A.W. reps have an obligation to put the welfare of the animals above personal gain and refrain from activities that would be detrimental to the best interests of these animals or HIGH PLAINS P.A.W. . These guidelines are presented with the realization that ethics are difficult to regulate, and most individual’s desire and intend to do what is right. Education and communication are the preferred methods of obtaining compliance to these practices.
1) NO High Plains P.A.W. adoptee shall sell, consign, or donate animals to such places as commercial/USDA breeders, pet stores, pet brokers, or catalog houses. Animals may not be offered to events such as raffles, auctions, drawings, lotteries, contests, or laboratories
By initialing below you are AGREEING to this specific policy of the Code of Ethics

Housing of Animals
1) High Plains P.A.W. believes that the ONLY acceptable housing method is in approved adoptive homes. All adoptive pet animals must be kept as indoor pets!
By initialing below you are AGREEING to this specific policy of the Code of Ethics

2) We believe that while some animals do love to be outside it is unacceptable to adopt an animal to solely live outside and animals should be given the option to go both inside and outside. There will be exceptions to this stipulation, however the burden is on the potential adopter to prove that they are an exception.

Training
If you are having issues with your new family member we expect that as a responsible home you will seek the professional help of a trainer or behaviorist. If you aren’t willing to do whatever it takes to keep your new family member and provide them the safe, happy and secure home they deserve then please don’t sign that you agree to the code of ethics and adopt elsewhere. We do NOT allow for our dogs to undergo ANY training methods beyond Positive Reinforcement or Balanced Training Methods with our preferred method being Positive Reinforcement. We also ask that our dogs not be trained with Ecollars. We spend many hours and put our hearts into rehabbing many dogs from inappropriate training methods. By initialing below you understand that only one of the 2 above may be used on a HPPAW animal and that you will do your best to ensure positive reinforcement methods are used.

This seems common sense, but here we are anyway, if we find that the dog has been used to breed, male or female, we will not only require IMMEDIATE surrender of the HPPAW dog but also any puppies in the care of the adopter at the time of seizure. We will also take legal steps as outlined regarding fines due.

Return Policy
We understand that sometimes a dog doesn’t work, however we expect, as an adopter who has agreed to our Code of Ethics, that you have sought the advice of a trainer or behaviorist. If you haven’t, please do so as you agreed to that as a stipulation of the adoption contract. We expect our families will do whatever is necessary to try and keep their new family member. If you aren’t willing to agree to this please don’t look to adopt from this organization.
You AGREE to consult a Positive Reinforcement or Balanced trainer (our preference being a positive reinforcement trainer), or a Canine Behaviorist BEFORE you begin the process to return the dog to High Plains PAW.

High Plains PAW Euthanasia Policy
Although mentioned in our Code of Ethics due to recent activities we now have a specific Euthanasia Policy for our adopted animals. We have this policy because we love our dogs, we care about our dogs FOREVER. When we bring a dog into our program it is a promise for their entire life or ours. We don’t ask you to share this responsibility to intrude on your ownership, but because in many cases we can offer another option or avenue for adopters and the HPPAW dogs or support in making the awful decision.
A High Plains PAW animal may NOT, under any circumstances, be euthanized for any reason beyond a vet diagnosed terminal illness or quality of life HEALTH RELATED issues. High Plains PAW MUST be contacted and given a reasonable amount of time to place the dog in new safe environment. If you want the animal removed immediately then the ADOPTER must put the animal in boarding at the ADOPTERS expense. In cases of vet diagnosed terminal illness High Plains PAW must receive notice from the adopters with confirmation from the vet.
