The third-grade team at Halls Cross Roads elementary has identified the need to increase student engagement, collect evidence about student achievement and teach responsively to meet the needs of students. These difficult tasks require technology tools that will enhance student learning in these three key areas. Utilizing tablets to access online programs such as Edulastic, Nearpod, ClassFlow, EdPuzzle, Mentimeter, Socrative, Padlet and Kahoot enables students’ progress to be monitored in real time. This allows teachers to individualize instruction based on students’ current needs. Learning is also maximized due to the increased engagement these programs promote.
Currently, the third grade does not have access to 1:1 devices. We would like to purchase 20 Kindle Fires in order to increase student access to digital tools. In the area of math, student PARCC and Benchmark assessment scores have fallen below the county average. The administration of The PARRC math test online necessitates that students have more opportunity to become proficient with both the content as well as digital tools. Embedding digital resources into daily instruction is a big step toward closing this gap. Many of our students do not have access to devices at home so it is imperative that we provide this access at school.
