The Story:
Fifth grade has a literacy unit focused on Immigration. This unit will explore a variety of sources to understand the experiences of America’s immigrants, past and present. This unifying theme will guide students as they discuss the essential questions, What motivates individuals/characters to immigrate? How does immigration impact a culture? How do immigrants adjust to new settings and environments? Students will read fiction and nonfiction to uncover many of the reasons, challenges, and processes of immigrating to a new country.
Using a variety of short and extended text, students will read and write to summarize, explain, and support opinions regarding events and characters. Students will engage in collaborative discussions regularly to express and adjust ideas about immigration.
The lesson plans in this unit incorporate principles from Common Core State Standards including but not limited to complex text, close reading, text dependent questions, text-based evidence, balance of texts, writing from sources, academic vocabulary, short, focused research, opportunities for speaking and listening through integration of the standards. Resources are infused to maintain engagement, deepen comprehension, and serve as resources for future investigation and research.
