In order to increase student engagement and student choice, I would like to introduce a Ukulele Unit to our grade 5 students. In our music program, student survey data show that the favorite units and most successful units are those where students are actively engaged: Grade 3 recorder, Grade 4 bucket drumming, Grade 5 physio ball/Lummi sticks, Orff instruments, chorus and units where students are performing.
Since the Magnolia Elementary School SPA plan addresses student choice and student engagement, this is just one more way our music department can support that plan.
In our school, approximately 87% (this fluctuates between 85-89%) of our families live in poverty and 34% of our grade 5 students are reading below grade level. Reading music and notation for ukulele may be different from reading text, but we are still reading, building stamina and engaging students in different types of text, as is outlined in the Common Core Curriculum. In addition, students will have student choice in this unit in order to pick activities in which they can be successful, relate to and enjoy. Currently, we do not have any ukulele instruments to provide since our students are unable to provide their own.
