Clinical Training
List positions for which you are claiming clinical experience in reverse chronological order (current or most recent positions first). Include employment positions, internships, non-CAMPEP-accredited residencies, and the clinical portions of postdoctoral fellowships. Do not include positions associated with graduate studies.
**NOTE** Clinical experience will only be counted following the date your highest degree was awarded. This clinical training must be under the supervision (see role of supervisor below) of a certified medical physicist. For graduate programs with a clinical medical physics component, a maximum of 12 months for a doctorate and six months for a master's degree may be credited (to be evaluated ONLY by the ABR). No more than 12 months of clinical training credit can be given for all graduate degrees. The ABR will review your transcript to determine if your graduate degree training included a clinical component.
To be eligible for NRC-recognized status (i.e., AMP or RSO), your CAMPEP-accredited residency or at least 24 months of clinical experience (if applying based on 36-month pathway) must be under the direction of an ABR-certified medical physicist. If you wish to have your application reviewed for potential NRC recognition, it is your responsibility to ensure that the medical physicist supervisor(s) indicated above is/are certified by the ABR. The ABR provides a free online searchable database to find and verify the status of ABR-certified individuals. The database can be accessed on the home page of the website: www.theabr.org, in the box "Verify Board Certification Status."
If you wish to receive NRC recognition but you do not have an ABR-certified medical physicist who has supervised your residency, or at least 24 months of your clinical training, please contact the ABR via email at information@theabr.org and we will provide additional information.
Role of supervisor: The certified medical physicist designated as the supervisor of clinical training must interact with the candidate (trainee) on a regular basis. Although same-location supervision is preferable, electronic review for candidates at a distance is acceptable to supplement face-to-face interactions. Through these interactions the supervisor(s) must:
- Review the professional activity/output of the candidate
- Become thoroughly familiar with the professional quality of the candidate's work
- Provide input and guidance on professional activities
- Determine the candidate's capability to work independently in the designated field of medical physics
- Be willing to provide a statement to the ABR, if requested, attesting to the above and certifying that the candidate is capable of working independently in the designated field of medical physics at the end of the training period.
