About the Fellowship
AMI's flagship program is an 18-month Farm and Food Fellowship that prepares individuals to become teachers and ambassadors for a more vibrant and accessible local food system. AMI fully sponsors Fellows to spend six months in immersive training on AMI’s Mountain Farm campus (Phase I) and then Fellows apply their training to build healthy communities through a year of service work with AMI and its partner non-profit organizations (Phase II).
The Fellowship has 5 program goals:
Grow Food. Fellows will build knowledge, skills and self-efficacy around growing, raising, storing and preserving a variety of foods year-round using regenerative and sustainable methods.
Connect to Nature. Through observation and exploration, Fellows will study natural systems and ways to work with nature to enhance food system sustainability.
Prepare to Lead. Fellows will explore issues and opportunities within the food movement and gain practice as leaders and educators in the surrounding area. Fellows will take on leadership roles within their Phase II partner organization and will successfully create, improve or expand relevant programs.
Build Community. Fellows will actively contribute to the formation of a close-knit cohort and build rapport within Phase II placements to grow healthy communities.
Practice Wellness. Fellows will develop personal wellness strategies and reflection practices, grounding their passion for the food movement.
AMI's Fellowship creates strong leaders who successfully work to build more cohesive community food systems. AMI alumni go on to work as local food coordinators, farmers, school garden facilitators, market farm managers, food systems educators, and advocates for sustainable food systems.
Applicants must be physically fit, able to lift 50 pounds, walk distances up and down steep hills, work outdoors for extended periods of the day, and be comfortable living and working communally as a team in a remote, mountain setting. Applicants invited to participate in the Fellowship must pass a background check.
Tuition to Phase I is fully subsidized by AMI for all Fellows who fulfill the AMI Fellowship requirements, including participation in the Phase II year of service. Phase I Fellows will receive $1,000 upon signature and commitment to the Phase II contract. During Phase II, Fellows earn $10 per hour, less payroll taxes.
