Dallas Association of Young Lawyers
2019 Judicial Internship Application
Application Deadline February 4, 2019
The Dallas Association of Young Lawyers ("DAYL") invites first and second-year law students to apply for DAYL's Summer Judicial Internship Program ("Program"). Judges from Dallas-area civil, criminal, probate, family, juvenile, and appellate courts will be participating.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the Program is to provide law students with invaluable behind-the-scenes experience working with the judiciary. A second, but equally important, purpose is to provide local Judges with research support. DAYL promotes diversity and it encourages applications from all law students, including law students who, because of their background, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender, disability, or socioeconomic status, are traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession.
REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have completed first-year civil procedure and legal writing courses before June 2019. Courses in evidence and criminal or appellate procedure are helpful but not required. Internship selections will be made by the participating judges. Applicants must be willing to commit to a six-week, full-time voluntary internship during the summer months and are expected to honor any commitments made to the judges. The internship is unpaid, and individual schedules will be determined by the judges.
Students selected to participate in the Program must attend a mandatory orientation presented by participating judges. The location and time of the orientation will be provided at a later date.
To be considered for placement in the Program, applicants should submit the following materials:
1. A completed Application (located on page 2);
2. A one-page statement of interest; and
3. A one-page resume.
COST: For law student members of the DAYL, there is no application fee. For non-member law students, the Program application fee is $15 and can be paid below. Law students who are currently not members of DAYL may join DAYL as a student member and the $15 Program application fee will be waived. DAYL membership information can be found
The Program is an unpaid, volunteer position
. The participating judges select the interns and will be responsible for coordinating any interviews, if applicable, and a work schedule. Interns shall maintain the highest level of integrity and ethical conduct while interning for a judge. Law students who apply to the program should always respond to a judge if contacted for a position. Should the law student not be available for an internship due to having accepted another position or due to another reason, a response to the judge declining the opportunity is required.
WINTER INTERVIEW SESSION: The Winter Interview Session is an opportunity for applicants to have a face-to-face interview with a Dallas Judge. The Winter Interview Session will be held at 5:00 p.m. on
Thursday, January 3, 2019
. The Winter Interview Session is 100% optional; however, many summer interns are selected during the Winter Interview Session. To participate in the Winter Interview Session, applicants must check the box on the application to indicate their interest in participating. Additional details will be sent at a later time. The deadline to apply for the Winter Interview Session is
January 2, 2019
. If you participate in the Winter Interview Session, you do not need to resubmit another application by the February 4 deadline. Your application will automatically be transferred.
STIPEND INFORMATION: To defray some cost of interning through the Program, the DAYL has made available up to five (5) $500 stipends that will be awarded to uniquely qualified law students who demonstrate a financial need or hardship. These stipends are intended to encourage participation in the Judicial Internship Program by candidates with diverse perspectives who would have difficulty participating without financial assistance.
