  • Character and temperament

A rescue dog or cat may have experienced an unfortunate history of one or more of the following: neglect, abuse, lonliness, distrust, hunger, etc. The most definitely experienced abandonment and the stress of transport from Texas and the stress of transition. An adjustment period of multiple days and sometimes weeks should be expected, but will only happen in some instances. Most dogs and cats are so happy to be home that they adjust very quickly. So it is something to prepare for and consider, but not necessarily something that will happen. Our dogs and cats also receive a lot of love and attention in their foster homes in Texas and in WA state so they have already had positive experiences to counter any negative experiences they may have had in their past lives.

We determine their character and temperament based on the behavior they display in their foster homes. Please keep in mind that they are sentient beings and that behavior may change/be different in your home than it was in the foster home. We cannot guarantee that a dog or cat will behave exactly the same way as they did in their foster home once placed in a new situations, just like humans may change behavior when they transition to new situations and environments. Any known behavioral issues are disclosed in the pet's individual profile. In either case, our rescued pets are loving and deserving of love. Our mission statement is 'Turning discarded pets into desired pets' and we truly want our pets in homes that are a perfect fit for them and their new family.

  • Placement

Submission of this application does not guarantee placement of the dog/cat as a foster in your home. Applicants must agree to a home visit if asked for one. Fostering is temporary and does not entitle the foster parent to adoption or to keeping their foster pet long term. The foster must return the pet to the rescue service immediately upon request. The foster must also give reasonable notice (7 days) should they no longer be able to foster the pet placed in their home.

Should the foster parent wish to adopt their foster pet, a separate adoption application needs to be completed. While we give our foster parents special consideration if they want to adopt, the main goal is to find the best possible home for each of our pets. There may be a home that is better suited for your foster pet than you are. If that is the case, it is not a reflection on you or your ability to care for a pet, it simply means that for that specific pet a different situation is more suitable. The majority of the time however, foster parents are able to adopt if they choose to do so, provide they are willing to go through the adoption process. Adoption fees are listed in the pets' individual profiles and in the adoption application.

  • Responsibilities of the foster parent

    1. The foster parent agrees to provide shelter, food and companionship to the foster pet placed in their home. The foster will not keep the foster pet outside or in unsafe conditions and will keep the pet leashed or contained at all times.

    2. Should the foster pet get lost or escape, the foster parent agrees to immediately contact the rescue service via desideratarescue@gmail.com and assist in the recovery of the foster pet, including but not limited to searching for the pet on the ground, posting on Nextdoor/Facebook/Craigslist, putting up posters in the area the pet was lost, handing out fliers to neighbors, etc.

In the case of a life-threatening emergency, other arrangements can be made, but the rescue service still has to be contacted to determine a course of action and to approve veterinary care.

    4. Once there is an approved for your foster pet, you will be given their contact information to set up the initial meet and greet. The purpose of this initial meet and greet is solely for the determination if the potential adopter wishes to continue in the adoption process upon meeting the pet in person. The rescue service will handle all of the other steps in the adoption process.

Potential adopters must come to you or a location convenient for you for the initial meet and greet. You are not required to or asked to travel anywhere. They must come to you.

    5. We ask that you provide pictures of your foster pet that can be used to promote their adoption. Sharing your foster pet on your own social media accounts greatly increases their chances of getting adopted quickly so it is appreciated if you are willing to post their profiles and pictures.
