With more than 850,000 youth arrested annually— and some 48,000 kids in confinement at any given time, the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate of minors and a greatly disproportionate number of youth of color in the system. Emmy-nominated actor Michael Kenneth Williams ("The Wire") talks to young people—including friends and family members—from Baltimore, Richmond, Toledo, and Brooklyn, to understand why it seems like an entire generation of young Americans is growing up behind bars. This feature explores why the country's mass incarceration problem can't be fixed without first addressing juvenile justice, and investigates solutions that local communities have employed resulting in drastic drops in crime and incarceration.
Following the documentary, a panel discussion featuring:
- Senator Will Smith, Montgomery County (District 20), Vice-Chair Judiciary Committee
- Delegate David Moon, Montgomery County (District 20)
- Toni Holness, Public Policy Director of the ACLU MD
- Stephanie Joseph, Assistant Public Defender, Montgomery County, MD
Will take place. Dessert will follow.
