How to use this application
This application has four pages. As you complete the application, your browser will save your progress for approximately 24 hours. If you use a different browser, your progress may not be saved. We strongly encourage you to prepare your application responses in advance and plan to submit your application on the same computer in one session. You can review the application overview and the essay response questions at alfiescholars.org/apply.
Document uploads
You will be asked to submit documents on the final page of the application. You may upload PDF and Microsoft Word documents (.doc and .docx). These are the only file types that are accepted.
Application Overview
Application – Please complete all sections carefully.
Resume/CV Activities – Please include your resume or curriculum vitae containing a summary of your education, work experience, service involvement, and up to five additional activities in which you spend a significant amount of time outside of class. These additional activities can include research/academic activities, sports, taking care of dependent loved ones, and/or hobbies. In addition, please list any honors or awards and the dates you received them, including membership on the Dean’s list or President’s List, honors program participation, scholarships, other honors or awards from your community college, and any honors/awards/recognition for community service.
Essays:
- Personal history – In a maximum of 2 double-spaced pages, please describe your life, family, educational, and other experiences that have shaped your personal and professional goals. And explain why you feel you are a match for the Alfie Scholars Program at Seattle University.
- Leadership essay – In 2 paragraphs, please explain what effective leadership means to you and the ways in which you have been a leader in your life.
- Social issues essay – In 1 page per issue, please discuss two contemporary social issues about which you feel passionate. For each issue, please briefly explain the issue, why it ignites passion in you, and why it is an issue of significant social consequence.
- Response essay – Please read the article Embracing Our Shared Humanity: Civility for Our Times (available at alfiescholars.org/apply). In less than 2 pages, please discuss why is it important for us to practice civility and in what ways you can foster civility in your personal and professional life.
Academic transcripts – Please submit unofficial transcripts from all educational institutions you have attended after high school.
Two letters of recommendation – Please provide two letters that speak to your intellectual curiosity and ability and your capacity to act as a leader for civility in your chosen field or, if you have not yet chosen a field, in general. One letter must be from a professor at your community college. Note: Letters of recommendation should be uploaded by the writer at alfiescholars.org/apply.
