We hope that you are as excited as we are to welcome over 50,000 people during the following 2 events on the same weekend: Chinatown Open House on Friday, February 1, 2019 and Night In Chinatown Festival & Chinese Lunar New Year Parade on Saturday, February 2, 2019.
Please inform your vendors and customers that road closures will be in effect on Friday, February 1, 2019, between 5:00 pm and 10:00 pm for the lion dance visitation, and Saturday, February 2, 2019 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. for the Night In Chinatown Festival & Chinese Lunar New Year Parade.
Hotel, Maunakea, Smith and Pauahi Streets will be closed to vehicular and bus service during both events. Partial road closures will be in effect on River, Nuuanu and Bethel Streets on Friday, February 1, 2019. There will also be a partial road closure on River Street on Sat, February 2, 2019.
The Chinese Lunar New Year Parade will occur on Saturday (February 2, 2019), on Hotel Street, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
The City and County of Honolulu has requested that we remind the merchants located on Hotel, Maunakea, Pauahi, River and Smith Streets that the sidewalk peddling ordinance will remain in effect during both events; Chinatown Open House (Choy Cheng) and Night In Chinatown Festival and Parade.
Storefront sales will be permitted as written in Section 29-6A.2 of the Revised Ordinances of Honolulu 1990: retail sales within the area extending up to 18 inches perpendicular from the storefront wall of a ground level retail business will be permitted.
Any merchant conducting business on the curbs and sidewalks for retail sales, including but not limited to selling products and cooked foods, is in violation of the Revised Ordinances of Honolulu. These actions have blocked the sidewalk for pedestrian traffic and created a health and safety issue. The City and County has indicated that the enforcement will remain in effect even if there is no bus service on Hotel Street.
Please visit the City and County of Honolulu website to obtain your copy of the Revised Ordinances of Honolulu 1990, Section 29-6A.2, Peddling by merchant of a store on a portion of a Chinatown sidewalk or mall. The Honolulu Police Department will enforce this ordinance during both events. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR COOPERATION!
