    Democratic Ideals Award for Outstanding Youth

    The Democratic Ideals Award for Outstanding Youth recognizes two local graduating seniors for civic mindedness and engagement, and future civic aspirations. The award honors students who have promoted democratic ideals in their communities during their tenure at high school. Democratic ideals include justice, equity and fairness, inclusiveness, respect for human dignity and rights, generosity, empathy, compassion and civility.

    Applicants must attend either San Lorenzo Valley High School or Scotts Valley High School. The application includes three short essay questions:

    (1) Describe how you have demonstrated democratic ideals through concern, care and action for fellow students and others in your community and world.

    (2) Respond thoughtfully about how your generation can address issues in our society.

    (3) Elaborate on your plans to further your civic engagement after graduation.

    The award is $500 for each recipient.

    The deadline for submission is March 27, 2022.
