Phillip Benne Memorial Scholarship
The Phillip Benne Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2012 by Caterpillar Global Security and Securitas Security Services USA, Inc. (through the Phillip Benne Memorial Scholarship Fund Committee) to honor deceased colleague Phil Benne. Benne earned a Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement Administration at WIU in 1975. He worked all his life in law enforcement, starting out as a police patrol officer in the city of Peoria, later becoming a field training officer, serving in the Criminal Investigations Bureau, was a K-9 officer, Special Response Team member and retiring in 2008 as lieutenant of the Technical Services Division after 30 years of service. In 1981 he received the Life Saving Award, 1986 the Distinguished Service Award, 1987 the American Legion Meritorious Service Award, and 1990 the Policemen of the Year award.
After retiring, Benne was hired by Securitas as a facility security manager for the Downtown Caterpillar Campus. He was later promoted to membership in Caterpillar Global Security as a senior security professional, and was then elevated by Securitas to the position of Director of U.S. Operations for the Caterpillar Account.
CRITERIA:
To be eligible for the Phillip Benne Memorial Scholarship Fund, applicants must:
- Be a major in Law Enforcement & Justice Administration, with a minor in Security Administration
- Have earned at least 60 semester hours (junior or senior status)
- Preference will first be given to residents of Peoria County, then central Illinois.
TERMS: Amount of award will be $1,000 annually, applied to the student's WIU account in two installments, $500 in fall semester and $500 in spring semester.
SELECTION PROCESS:
Selection will be made by the LEJA Scholarship Committee.
