What is it?
Hawaiian Islands writers ages 12+ are invited to participate in a short story writing contest! We’re spotlighting science fiction and fantasy, culture, mythology, and ohana, so if you’ve got a speculative story that you’d like to share, we’d love to read it! We’re looking for work that inspires, that tests the bounds of imagination, that challenges norms and explores worlds through a unique lens.
Entrants may be invited to participate in a writing workshop with professional authors at Hawaiicon and/or present a live "reading" of their work. Selected stories maybe invited to contribute to a Hawaiicon Anthology, a published collection of works.
Winners:
One winner from each category will be selected. The winner of the Adult Writing Category will receive a 4-day pass to HawaiiCon.The of the Keiki Writing Category will receive two 1-day passes to HawaiiCon!
Winners will be announced on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Winners will also be contacted via email.
**Contestants between the ages of 12 and 17 need to obtain a parent's or guardian's permission to enter.
**All writers are limited to one submission. No simultaneous submissions, please. All writers retain the rights to their work. All decisions made by the judges regarding the winners are final. By submitting, you are agreeing to all contest rules.
Word Count and Formatting
Maximum Word Count: 2,000 words. Please submit your short story in standard manuscript formatting.

How do I submit?
Please submit your stories onine in a .doc, .docx, rtf, or pdf format. Your file name should be a shortened version of your work's title.
Please do not include your name in the body of the document. Judging will be blind, without judges knowing the name of the author.
Deadline:
Stories should be submitted no later than June 1, 11:59 pm HST.
What we’re NOT looking for:
Stories with gratuitous violence, explicit and/or offensive language, sexual content, or previously published work.
