This form should be used to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) according to the Admissions Policy of Moorlands College. This policy can be accessed via the College’s website.

The key principles by which any application for RPL is assessed are:

Authenticity — the reliability of the evidence presented
Level — where appropriate, the academic level of the evidence
Relevancy — the relevancy of the evidence to the proposed programme (or its modules)
Currency — how recent the evidence is and whether previous learning has been kept up to date by its use in practice
Quantity — the amount of evidence

You are strongly encouraged to discuss any potential application for RPL with the Programme Leader, including the evidence that you will need to provide to support your application.

About yourself

You should only apply for RPL if you have already submitted a full application to study at Moorlands College. This form enables you to provide information to the College so that your prior learning can be assessed by academics. This is an academic process, separate to the more general admissions process, and it may be beneficial to repeat some information contained in your application so that the team assessing the your RPL application can make their academic assessment.

Which type of RPL are you applying for?

You can apply for one (or very rarely more than one) of three types of RPL. Clicking on the boxes below will add questions to this form that you need to complete.

Entry with Advanced Standing

Tick this box to apply for RPL so that you can enter your proposed programme at a higher level or stage of study than the normal entry point (e.g. to start undergraduate studies at level 5, or postgraduate studies at the diploma stage).

Evidence Requirements for Entry with Advanced Standing:

You must upload evidence that will demonstrate how you have met your intended programme's Learning Outcomes for the Level/Stage for which you are seeking credit.

The evidence may be of certified and/or experiential prior learning. If certified, you will need to provide a transcript from your previous studies, together with the Programme Documentation which specifies the relevant Learning Outcomes. If experiential, you will need to provide details and documentation demonstrating how you have met the relevant Learning Outcomes.

For example, if you are applying to enter at Level 6, you must demonstrate how you have met your intended programme's Level 5 Learning Outcomes. If you are applying to enter at Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma Stage, you must demonstrate you you have met your intended programme's Postgraduate Certificate Learning Outcomes. This will typically mean providing a table of the intended programme’s learning outcomes and explaining how each one is demonstrated by your prior learning.

For each module for which you are seeking credit, you must upload evidence that will demonstrate how you have met its Learning Outcomes.

The evidence may be of certified and/or experiential prior learning. If certified, you will need to provide a transcript from your previous studies, together with the Programme and Module Documentation which specifies the relevant Learning Outcomes. If experiential, you will need to provide details and documentation demonstrating how you have met the relevant Learning Outcomes.

Demonstrating Learning Outcomes will typically mean providing a table of module learning outcomes and explaining how each one is demonstrated by your prior learning.

You need to upload evidence to demonstrate how you have achieved learning outcomes equivalent to the standard entry criteria for you intended programme.

If you are intending to apply for non-standard entry, you must speak to the relevant Programme Leader before applying, to discuss what evidence to provide.

Certificated Evidence

If you are applying for RPL on the basis of certification you should read these notes carefully. Your application for RPL on the basis of certification will depend on the quality of the evidence you supply.

You should submit as evidence, scanned copies of as many of the following as are relevant and available to you:

Certificate(s) (e.g., diploma or degree certificates) or a letter confirming your award
Transcript(s) of grades
Documents that define the programme, listing the intended outcomes and available modules (these are known as programme specifications and course maps in the UK Higher Education sector) — if these documents are available on the internet, please submit a website address; if you do not have access to official documents defining the programme, please describe the content of the programme in your own words, and if possible include a sample of your work from the programme
A document where you list the start and end dates of the studies, and indicate whether you were studying full-time or part-time, and, if part-time, indicate what percentage of full-time this was
Translations of relevant parts of these documents, if they are not in English

If you are still studying at the time of your application for RPL, and do not have the final result, please submit evidence of this.

Any offer of a place to study on the basis of certified RPL will normally be conditional on you presenting original copies of your certificates and/or transcripts before your studies start.

Experiential Evidence

If you are applying for RPL on the basis of experience you should read these notes carefully. Your application for RPL on the basis of experience will depend on the quality of the evidence you supply.

You should submit a portfolio of evidence. The College’s admissions team can give more specific advice to you, but, in principle, there are no absolute requirements for the portfolio. It could contain:

Relating to any non-certificated courses that you have participated in
- The curriculum
- A certificate of attendance or a letter confirming your attendance
Your CV (resumé), possibly with a commentary explaining your responsibilities and typical tasks in each job (emphasising those aspects which are relevant to the proposed programme of study)
Character references, particularly from people qualified to estimate your academic capabilities
Samples of work you have produced, particularly those that demonstrate your academic ability
Translations of relevant parts of documents, if they are not in English
An explanation of how the evidence you are supplying qualifies you for RPL (if you are applying for credit for modules, this should include explanation of how your evidence demonstrates that you have met the learning outcomes of the modules for which you are seeking credit)

Submission of Evidence

You must submit evidence, irrespective of which type of RPL you are applying for and the basis upon which you are applying for RPL.

Your evidence should include a document called “Explanation of Evidence” that explains and introduces each item of evidence. If the evidence includes any previous qualifications that you are using as evidence, this explanation should make as clear as possible the organisation that delivered the studies, the quantity and level of the learning, and whether it was formally accredited. See the sections above to understand what other evidence you should be submitting.
