Expression of Interest for
The Shake Up
5 local emerging artists between the ages of 18 and 30 (or within the first 5 years of their creative practice) will have the opportunity to collaborate with Sydney-based performance company Branch Nebula on Tantrum's BIG project The Shake Up. The Shake Up will use the 30th anniversary of the 1989 earthquake as a platform for exploring moments of change in Newcastle’s past to prepare for what the future might hold. Selected artists will work with Lee and Mirabelle from Branch Nebula to devise material for the event itself, as well as playfully facilitating the involvement and intervention of community members with a connection to Newcastle’s past or ideas for its future.
We’re looking for local artists who are already on the journey towards developing an independent practice as makers of original work. The Shake Up represents a unique opportunity to experience a socially-engaged creative process where artists and community members can collaborate as equals towards a dynamic event of local relevance. This feeds into Tantrum’s mission of taking a creative approach towards making a social impact, while exposing emerging artists to community processes that may expand their independent practice and potentially provide a bridge to new employment opportunities.
Emerging artists from all creative backgrounds are eligible to apply, including theatre, performance, writing, film, dance, movement, visual arts, digital arts and performance art. Tantrum especially encourages artists from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, both with and without disability, to apply and we endeavour to provide equal opportunities regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. Don’t hesitate to contact Tantrum if you would like any assistance with your application.
