Assisteen Membership Application
  • Welcome Prospective Assisteen Members,

Thank you for your interest in joining Assisteens of Capistrano Valley. We are an auxiliary of Assistance League of Capistrano Valley and a member of National Assistance League, founded in 1935. Assistance League founder, Anne Banning, felt that it was fine to serve youth but better to let youth serve. She called on the daughters and granddaughters of Assistance League to assist in various philanthropic projects.

Today, Assisteens of Capistrano Valley, welcomes male and female teens from grades 8 through 12, dedicated to community service. We maintain about 100 members who follow the concept of: “All for service and service for all.”

Monthly meetings are conducted during the school year (approx. August through May) by members, with supervision from their moms, to plan ways to serve those in need. Members implement their plans at activities that take place throughout the school year, outside of regular monthly meetings:

    • Philanthropic projects for organizations such as CHOC, Family Assistance      Ministries (FAM), Operation School Bell, the military, and senior centers.

    • Fundraising activities such as See’s Candy sales and volunteering at Assistance League of Capistrano Valley’s thrift store, the Bargain Box.

A secondary purpose of the program is to give members learning opportunities for self-improvement. Speakers, who are experts in their fields, are invited to present topics such as self-defense, public speaking, etiquette, and college planning at our monthly membership meetings.

Through their consistent participation in this 4 to 5-year program, Assisteens have the opportunity for character building experiences, fostering key life skills including:

    • Accountability

    • Collaboration

    • Event Planning

    • Generosity

    • Leadership

    • Mentorship

    • Organization

    • Poise

    • Public Speaking

    • Time Management

Finally, Assisteens provides an environment to build friendships, memories, and practical skills that will last a lifetime. We welcome you to explore our volunteer organization and join our chapter.

    Yours in service,

     Shannon Longnecker

    How Hours are Calculated:

Only Assisteen sponsored events may be used for Assisteen hours. While many of our members also donate time and energy to their church, school, or other philanthropic organizations, these cannot be counted toward Assisteens obligations or the Presidential Service Award. There are also limits to the number of hours that can be earned for “donations” (ie: Bargain Box, Coat Drive, Project Prom, Feminine Hygiene Kits, etc.).

Members may not record and will not earn more than the maximum hours allowed for donations until their 30 auxiliary philanthropic hours have been met. Most of the teens meet the minimum by attending meetings, participating in our yearly fundraiser, working their Bargain Box shift, and working another event or two.

Here is an example of 30 Hour requirement:

    • Monthly Meetings (Required): 2 hours (8 meetings)                   16 hours
    • Fundraiser (Required): (See's Candy sales)                                2 hours
    • Bargain Box Shift (Required):                                                   6 hours
    • USMC Donations: (4 DZ Cookies)                                                4 hours
    • Cards for Senior citizens (10)                                                      2 hours
    • Total                                                                                         30 hours

*Assisteen's must log in and record hours ONLINE by the next general meeting to receive credit for service.

    2. Annual Membership dues for siblings ($154)
