New Life Greek Rescue was founded in July 2013 after I visited a privately run shelter in Northern Greece whilst on holiday. Originally spread over two shelters due to ill health From 2017 we now work with only one shelter in a small village just outside of Thessaloniki. Only the dedication of private rescuers like ours, of ex pats and animal loving Greek people can help change attitudes and give the chance of a new life to a few of these dogs.
It is a misconception of many tourists to Greece that the strays they see being fed during their holiday will remain safe, once the tourist season is over the dogs are regularly poisoned as a method of control. All year round there are accidents and abuse to strays who are generally treated as vermin.
Space is extremely limited and we work hard to ensure dogs are matched with the correct home to give them a chance in life and also to provide adopters with their most loyal friend. We often have to use a private pension (pet hotel) known to us for some of our dogs when we have no more room left.
