Dear Parents of Student Athletes,
I would like to personally extend an invitation for your child to participate in The Gambrills-Odenton Recreation Council’s High School Volunteer Program (HSVP). The purpose of the HSVP is to provide community service opportunities for rising junior and senior high school student athletes while connecting generations through sports mentorship, as well as welcome more volunteers into the GORC family.
To ensure the mutual objectives of the HSVP are met, the participants should adhere to strict guidelines so that preexisting academic and athletic responsibilities of the student athletes are not hindered. Student athletes will choose the amount of time per week that they will commit to the volunteer effort. Upon satisfying that time obligation for the week, students will be free to donate any additional time should they choose to do so.
Students will submit an online application selecting which season and sport for which they would like to volunteer. After submitting an application, head coaches will review the applications and select the participants based on need. After selection, the head coach will contact the participant’s family to discuss the opportunity. Once a student starts the volunteer program, we expect that he/she will continue to fulfill his/her commitment for the entire youth sports season. We also expect that the student athlete will conduct him/herself accordingly in order to provide a positive example for the athletes at the park.
In order to participate in the HSVP, the student athlete must meet the State of Maryland GPA eligibility requirements for sports participation. Also, the student athlete must be willing to volunteer for a minimum of ONE hour per week starting with Spring workouts in May.
I look forward to working with the best and brightest that our county has to offer. I believe your participation in this program is a win-win situation for us all. The HSVP can be used as a critical stepping stone towards strengthening our community by engaging and reinvesting our most important natural resource --its people.
We will also need chain crews for our home games, so students can earn extra hours by volunteering for the chain crew.
