  • In order to promote a better understanding of its mission and operation, it is the policy of the Greensboro Police Department to permit citizens to ride in police vehicles as a passenger/observer. Participation in the vehicle ride-along program will be limited to a maximum of one six-hour ride-along per 12 months, between 7 am and 2 am.

    All approved participants should report to Police Headquarters at 320 Federal Place to be picked up for their Ride-Along.

    • Riders must be at least 18 years old or older.
    • Participants must be able to pass a background check. Riders will be denied if they have prior criminal felony charges or any serious misdemeanor charges; if they have been banned from specific properties; is under the influence of an impairing substance, drugs or alcohol; if they have a pending lawsuit against the Department or City; if they have negative character references from Department employees; or if there are staffing issues.
    • Riders must abide by the conditions of participation as indicated in the Conditions of Partipation and Waiver Agreement section of this form.
    • There will only be one rider per vehicle.
    • Suitable dress and personal hygiene are required. Riders must wear comfortable, casual business attire, which includes neat jeans, khakis or dress pants and collared shirts, turtlenecks and sweaters. Prohibited are ripped jeans, revealing clothing, open-toed shoes, shorts, T-shirts, beach wear, leggings, athletic wear, law-enforcement clothing or equipment, and clothing items with advertising or inflammatory images or statements. Participants cannot carry weapons during the ride-along. 
    • Citizens requesting to participate in a ride-a-long cannot ride with a family member, nor can they request a specific district or officer. Selections are made by the Watch Operations Supervisor(s).
    • Riders are allowed a max of 6 hours during their ride-along, once a year.
    • Hours for ride-alongs begin at the start of a shift: 
      • 1st Shift- 7am
      • 2nd Shift-10:00am
      • 3rd Shift-4:00pm
      • 4th Shift-8:00pm (this shift rider ends at 2am)

      * The Ride-Along appointments are closed for city holidays.

       

      Anyone who submits a form should be aware that in accordance with the North Carolina Public Records law, found in North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 132, their e-mail address is considered public record.

    Ride-Along appointments are in high demand and book quickly.
    The earliest available appointment could be 2-3 weeks (sometimes longer) from today.

    Riders are allowed a max of 6 hours during their ride-along, once a year.

    Hours for ride-alongs begin at the start of a shift, and riders must arrive at least 10 minutes before the starting time of the ride-along: 

    1st Shift- 7am
    2nd Shift-10:30am

    3rd Shift-4:30pm

    4th Shift-8:30pm (this shift rider ends at 2am)

    * Ride-Along appointments are closed for city holidays.

    Dates with grayed out appointment times have already been reserved.

    Only days with blue appointment times can be selected for Ride-Along appointments.

      Ride-Along Conditions of Participation

      Greensboro Police Department

    • As part of my request to participate in the Greensboro Police Department’s Citizen Ride-Along Program, the following considerations will apply:


      1. Participation in this program is a privilege and courtesy extended by the Greensboro Police Department. As such, the Greensboro Police Department reserves the right to modify, control, deny, or cancel an individual’s participation at any time.


      2. The Watch Operations Officer or his/her designee may conduct an inquiry into an applicant’s suitability to participate when there are reasonable and documented circumstances which indicate that such participation would not be in the best interest of the Department.


      3. Each participant is under the direct and complete control of the officer/employee to which assigned. An officer experiencing difficulty with a participant has the prerogative to discharge the individual at the Watch Operations Center office.


      4. All participants will participate in a passenger/observer capacity only. Participants are not permitted to (a) take part in any police action, (b) assist in conducting investigations, (c) operate any police vehicle, (d) handle or possess firearms, mace, or any other police weapons or equipment, (e) use the communications system except in the event of extreme emergency, (f) or perform any other police task or function.


      5. In as much as participants reflect the professionalism of the Greensboro Police Department, suitable dress and personal hygiene are required.
