Submit your resume, cover letter and a writing sample from a journal and/or blog article that speaks to your ability to write compellingly for a general audience. If you do not have a writing sample, you may write a short article from one of the three topics below in order to demonstrate your writing ability. (600-words max).
Imagine, as you write this story, that you are explaining the topic to a friend who is new to the topic without a strong science background. The idea is to communicate the essence of the paper without getting lost in jargon, statistics, or methodology, but without over simplifying.
Tips for understanding a complex paper:
It may be helpful to start by reading over the abstract until you understand it, jump to the results/conclusions looking for key findings and recommendations, and then read the middle. Look for a methodology summary statement and for details that might be of interest to a general reader. Avoid getting lost in small details.
