Held at Ocean View Growing Grounds - 4540 Ocean View Blvd, San Diego, CA 92113
We start with a sorting exercise where ‘Soil Safari’ instructor leads students to separate the materials from their bag into three categories – ‘Recycle’, ‘Trash’ and ‘Compost’. The material we collect in the ‘compost’ category is going to be the ingredients with which we ‘Make Lunch for Mama Earth’.
Students go to the compost area and add the ingredients into an active pile. We break open into another pile and examine the various physical and chemical features – steam, heat, fungi, bugs, odors, moisture, mulch, foodscraps……
We talk about how everything is working in symbiosis. We sift some soil from the finished batch. Students come back to the table area and we make a poster of 'My Compost Pile is 140 Degrees!!!'
No refunds. Students must be chaperoned by parent or teachers. This is not a daycare or day camp type offering. There are no restrooms onsite. The closest restroom is at a Home Depot a few blocks away. Chaperones and participants will be asked to sign a waiver before particpating.
WIGGLES & JIGGLES
We'll warm up with a worm dance and learn about the worm anatomy. We'll dive into their habitat, meet all the other creatures that live with them. We'll end the activity by making a worm box for our classroom and learn how to care for these wiggling creatures so they can give us nutrient rich soil for our gardens!
