  • Adoption Program Requirements

  • GENERAL RULES

If approved for adoption, the adopter agrees to the following:

Adopted horses must NEVER be neglected, abandoned, or inhumanely treated. Adopters must provide regular farrier and veterinary care, bi-annual vaccinations, medication as needed, a 6-8 week de-worming program as recommended by a licensed veterinarian, proper nutrition and exercise, and ample pasture for grazing.

Adopters will have no charges or convictions of inhumane treatment to animals.

The adopter agrees that the horse cannot be sold, traded, leased, or given away* or used for any commercial purpose (including breeding). The horse(s) must never be sent to an auction.

Horses are herd animals and must never be kept alone; therefore, H.O.P.E. Acres Rescue requires at least one other equine for company (donkey, miniature horse, pony, or horse) at the new adoptive home.

H.O.P.E. Acres Rescue reserves the right to provide life long follow-ups to adoptions. With prior notification, H.O.P.E. Acres Rescue may request a visit at different intervals each year. For first-time horse owners, an initial follow-up visit will occur within the first two months of adoption.

The adopter is responsible for all expenses incurred for horse care; there are no reimbursements from H.O.P.E. Acres Rescue.

  • HORSE CARE

If approved for adoption, the adopter agrees to the following:

The adopter will provide nutritious amounts of food and water, a safe shelter, and humane treatment at all times. If boarding, the adopter agrees that all of the required provisions for care are met (i.e., the feeding program keeps the horse in good flesh meaning that no backbone or ribs show); otherwise the adopter is subject to a breach of the adoption requirements and the horse will be removed. The adopter will allow H.O.P.E. Acres Rescue to come onto the property where the horse is located with prior notification.

If the horse is located at your property, a minimum of 2 acres is preferred with shelter in the form of a run-in shed or barn that can accommodate each horse.

The adopter will not place the horse with an abusive trainer or an unskilled rider unless such rider is being provided with professional riding instruction.

The adopter will not allow the horse to run at large; adequate fencing must be provided and kept in good repair (prefer no barbed wire unless electric wiring is also provided).

H.O.P.E. Acres Rescue must be notified immediately if the horse dies. A veterinarian’s statement/cause of death is requested along with permission to contact the vet.

  • DONATIONS

H.O.P.E. Acres Rescue asks for a donation to help cover the cost of care and training of horses at the rescue. Donations can be made by cash, credit card, money order or cashiers check and made payable to H.O.P.E. Acres Rescue. Your donation is paid at the time of adoption and is non-refundable for any reason.

  • ALL APPLICATIONS ARE REVIEWED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS. ALL FINAL DECISIONS ON ADOPTIVE HOMES ARE VOTED ON BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS.

Adopter(s) has hereby read, understood and agrees to abide by the above requirements for adoption of the H.O.P.E. Acres Rescue horse(s).
