In an effort to ensure adopting spent hens is the right fit for you, we kindly ask that you consider the information below before filling out this form. Our number one goal is to find forever homes for these hens where they can live out their lives knowing love and kindness – whether laying or not. We don't mean to be rude or come off as insensitive, we just feel it’s important to be totally honest about our expectations upfront.
Spent hens have been confined to small cages their entire lives and will be terrified of everything in the beginning. It’s going to take a lot of interaction with them so they'll get used to people. They will need to be kept in a safe area and not let out to free-range until they have had time to adjust. If left unsupervised too soon, they may fall victim to predators or run away.
We cannot in good conscience approve anyone who 1.) only wants them for eggs and plans to get rid of them if/when they stop laying, or 2.) wants to use them for meat. It isn’t our place to tell people what they can or cannot eat (to each their own). But expecting spent hens to stay egg-laying machines isn't realistic, and pushing them to keep at it isn’t the future we want for these girls. They've been through enough and their overworked systems need a break.
