  • CAPS Practicum Application

  • Dear SIUC Graduate Trainee Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in a Practicum position at SIUC Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). We welcome your application and look forward to reviewing your information.

Counseling and Psychological Services works hard to meet the needs of our clients as well as to provide excellent training for SIUC graduate students. Training is an extremely valued part of our work and we aim to provide a supportive environment with supervisors who prioritize your growth and development. We highly value CAPS trainees and consider you an integral part of our staff and the culture of CAPS.

Selection: Practicum Trainees are selected based on previous clinical experience, recommendations from references and faculty from your home program, and your personal interviews with CAPS staff. The maximum number of trainees selected is determined each year based on agency needs.

Training Requirements and Areas of Focus: CAPS currently offers multiple levels of training and a variety of training emphasis opportunities. In order to be eligible for a specific training opportunity, practicum trainees are required to apply in advance. Eligibility requirements are listed on the next pages of this application packet. You may apply to more than one training area based on your interests. In addition to Beginning Practicum and Advanced Practicum training opportunities, the following training emphasis areas are currently available:

    1. Alcohol and Other Drug Program (AOD)

    2. Crisis Intervention and Intake Training

    3. Eating Disorder Outpatient Program (EDOP)

    4. Group Psychotherapy (Process or Skills Group)

    5. Interdisciplinary Health Care (IHC)

Orientation: Practicum orientation takes place the week prior to the start of the fall academic semester and is mandatory for all CAPS trainees. We work with your academic department to minimize overlap with other training obligations.

Supervision: Assignments for supervision are made every semester by our Administrative Training Team. Practicum trainees are notified about supervision assignments prior to the start of each semester. Practicum trainees may be assigned a different supervisor for the fall and spring semesters.

Please review our website for additional information and please contact me with any questions you may have regarding CAPS Practicum Training Program. We appreciate your interest in our training program!

    Sincerely,

    MaryKate Freeman, Psy.D.

    Practicum Training Director
