When observing what should be looked at:
- Positioning
*prior to start of game (on the circle at the position that would be taken when at the square)
*start of game (opposite corners of centre square)
*during play (10-15m from play)
*set shot at goal (behind point post in direction of the kick)
*kick in after point (on the 50m arc)
*after goal is scored (dependant on which runner, long and short run)
*ball up in centre after goal (opposite corners of centre square)
- Triggering
*prior to start of game (jogging off after BOTH teams have split to corner opposite partner)
*ball up in centre (backing off square towards centre, then taking direction of play)
*turnover in play (ball kicked completely opposite direction, effort to catch up to play)
*set shot at goal (effort to point post, running backwards once past the location of set shot)
*after point is scored (effort backwards to
*after goal is scored (together with partner running ball back to centre, field umpire)
- Signalling
*sharp, loud whistle
*clear and strong decision making
*straight arm for out of bounds, facing field, gaining the field umpires attention
*straight arms for out on the full, facing field, side stepping, gaining field umpires attention, clear pointing out the mark and backing off on fat side direction
- Throw Ins
*height (reasonable for age group, enough to allow rucks to contest)
*length (aiming for between 12-18m)
*coming in if required
*accounting for conditions (wind mainly)
- Work Rate
*overall effort in the game sense (positioning, triggering, signalling and throw ins scored as one)
- Team work
*working with other boundary when running ball back to centre
*working with field umpires and goal umpires (close decisions, near the line calls and scoring decisions)
