Thank you for your interest in the Patient Care Technician training program! We are excited for you to apply. If accepted into the program, you will learn how to become part of our nursing care team by providing direct patient care, such as vital signs, bed/baths, transport patients, answer call lights, and keep track of inputs and outputs. The cost of the PCT training program is covered by the Hospital. You will be paid as you attend the training program.

1). What is the Patient Care Technician Training Program?
- This 7-week program is designed to train participants to start a career as a Patient Care Technician. The program consists of 4 weeks of classroom training from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., which is immediately followed by 3 weeks of clinical instruction working three 12 hour day shifts from 6:45 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. each week, including weekends and holidays.
2). Who is eligible to participate in the training program?
- The following are required for participation in the training program:
- A High School Diploma or GED is preferred.
- Successful completion of the Hospital's standard background check.
- Completion of the Full Employment Council (FEC) application (if accepted into program).
- Customer Service experience is a PLUS.
3). I'm a current employee of North Kansas City Hospital. Am I eligible to apply for the program?
- CURRENT EMPLOYEES: MUST have completed six months of hospital employment in your current position prior to applying for the program.
4). What are the program requirements?
- ATTENDANCE: Your completion of the program is dependant upon completing a required amount of classroom and clinical hours. Your attendance is vital and required for the full seven week course duration.
- You WILL NOT be granted time off during the program, even if you have Paid Time Off (PTO) available.
- Participation and Achievement. You MUST be on time and prepared for each class.
- You will be assigned outside homework and are expected to complete each assignment.
- You must be able to learn in a fast-paced environment.
- You will be given examinations and are REQUIRED to pass each examination, in order to continue with the program.
- If you do not come to class prepared, or if you fail your examinations, you will be removed from the program.
- Service Oriented Mindset. You MUST be able to work well with people and be willing to go the extra mile to ensure that the best patient care is provided to our patients. Follow ALL Hospital Policies. Violation of a policy may result in discipline, up to and including termination.
5). What is my scheduling commitment?
- First 4 Weeks: Classroom Training: Monday thru Friday, 8am-4:30pm.
- Last 3 Weeks: Clinical instruction consisting of 12-hour day shifts (6:45 a.m. to 7:15 p.m.) working 3 shifts each week, including every third weekend, and holidays.
- After successfully completing the seven-week training program, you will begin your Patient Care Tech role, working three 12-hour night shifts from 6:45 p.m. to 7:15 a.m. each week, including weekends and holidays.
6). What happens if I am not successful in the program?
- If you are not successful in the program, your employment at North Kansas City Hospital could be terminated.
- If you are eligible for rehire, you will have the option to apply for any open position for which you are qualified.
7). What are the expectations after I complete the program?
- You will be required to sign a work agreement stating that you will work as a PCT for at least 12 months. If your employment is terminated for any reason, voluntary or involuntary, prior to completion of the 12-month work agreement, you will be required to repay a prorated portion of the total cost of training received ($1,995.00).
- If your training was paid through an FEC grant, you will not be required to repay the fee.
- The Patient Care Tech is scheduled to work the following shedue:
Nights: 6:45pm-7:15am
Every 3rd weekend
Rotating holidays
8). What is the difference between this program and the one provided by MEDS?
- The Hospital uses a combination of MEDS and Hospital staff to teach the Program. Many of the MEDS written materials are provided to Program Participants. While this program is based on the MEDS CNA training program, the format is not the same.
9). I'm currently in school. Will North Kansas City Hospital work with my schedule while enrolled in the program?
- No. Unfortunately, due to the time an d training commitment with our Professional Development Team we are not able to provide schedule flexibility. Attendance for all scheduled training and clinical instruction is mandatory.
10). Is there an opportunity to re-apply for the program, if I don't make it through the first time?
- Yes. You will have an opportunity to re-apply for the program when it becomes available. Like all applicants, you will be re-evaluated for the program.
11). Will I be paid while attending the program?
- Yes. Pay will also be discussed during the interview process.
