• Essay Incubator Application: 2019-2020

    Thank you for applying to the Essay Incubator! This application will ask you for some basic information. It will also ask you to upload two documents: your Letter of Introduction and your writing sample. Please make sure these documents are in Microsoft Word, double-spaced, and in 12-point font. For tracking purposes, your name should appear in the file name.The absolute page limit for the writing sample under these specifications is 40 pages. The application requires at least 15 pages of writing, and at least two different and complete essays. If your essays are very short, you may submit more than two amounting to at least 15 pages. Decisions will be emailed to applicants in late August. Please use the "Previous" and "Next" buttons to navigate and change your application before you finally click "Submit." If you have any technical difficulties filling out this application, please email programs@grubstreet.org. If you have any questions about the curriculum, logistics, or general terms of the Incubator, please email dariel@grubstreet.org. After you submit your application, a link to our separate Fellowship Application will be provided. You will need to fill out this separate application in order to be considered for one of our fellowships. You will receive a confirmation email once our system has received your submission.

  • Letter of Introduction

    This letter (500 words or fewer) is an informal statement to help the committeelearn more about you and why you’d like to participate in the Incubator. Please address: 1) the kind/type/genre of essays you write or hope to be writing; 2) any goals for your work and publication, and what you’d like to learn over our eight months together; 3) what you think you can offer the class and your fellow writers.

    Please list the name, email address, and phone number of a former instructor, mentor, or editor who has worked with you on your writing in some capacity. A GrubStreet contact is not required.

  • Experience

    Please list the titles of writing courses or seminars you have taken in the past five years and the institutions that offered them. This can include conferences and residencies (i.e. Bread Loaf, Sewanee, Muse and the Marketplace). Please also include the approximate length of each workshop (1-day, 10-week, 1-semester, 3-year, etc.). Experience in GrubStreet workshops is not required.
  • Writing Sample

    Please upload one Microsoft Word document containing your writing sample. The application requires at least 15 pages of writing, and at least two different and complete essays. If your essays are very short, you may submit more than two amounting to at least 15 pages. Your sample should be no more than 40 pages total. Essays should be paginated the writer's contact information on the first page of the document.
