Welcome to Play Music! We are an educational program of Inner Arts Initiative, a small Brooklyn-based non-profit. Inner Arts Initiative is a movement towards wholeness and wellness through creative expression and listening. We believe that personal healing leads to collective healing, with creative expression being a key component in this work.
Towards this collective liberation, we offer programs and experiences which support folx on the creative journey. We offer private lessons, teacher trainings, creative healing experiences, podcasts, meditations, performances, and expansive art projects that seek to expand our society's connection to creativity and expression.
Play Music specifically provides progressive private music lessons. This program was originally founded with the idea that all people have the capacity to creatively express themselves and to do so is joyful, healing, and part of being a whole person.
This teaching work is centered in decolonizing music education and broadening our understanding of creativity and expression. Going beyond traditional conservatory and academic expectations of music making. While we believe in teaching people to write, play, listen etc. we value a healthy and sustainable connection to creative expression above any skill that one might develop.
The teaching fellowship is a year-long paid teacher training that is collaborative in nature. Where fellows will work with staff to dismantle limiting beliefs around creativity, learn our teaching approach, and develop their own unique style of teaching. Upon review teaching fellows will be offered a teaching position on our staff.
The following application is intended for our staff to get to know you and for you to share your interest in this work. Please answer as honestly and openly as possible, knowing that we are looking for a teaching fellow who will be a collaborative member of our team, not just an intern or employee. In addtional, please upload your resume and provide two professional references.
Please note that lessons take place within student's homes. Many buildings do not have elevator access and require the teacher to walk up several flights of stairs. Please take this into consideration before applying.
We look forward to connecting with you!
Best,
The Play Music team
