As part of our mission to connect creatives through diverse and experiential endeavors, Light Grey Art Lab is proud to coordinate our eighth year of the Light Grey Art Lab Residency Programming! Please read through the form below and enter your details to be considered for the upcoming artist-in-residence teams.
THE CONCEPT:
Since 2014, the Light Grey Art Lab team has traveled to Iceland and Norway to explore, make, and learn alongside diverse creatives. We are now accepting limited applications for 2022– we looking forward to meeting and traveling with a new group of creatives!
Our work and our lives have been transformed by what we've learned from our travels to Iceland and Norway. The environment is entrancing on a grand and primal level, and we wish to bring leaders in the art world together here to learn and share thoughts on creativity, problem-solving and ideation. We hope to learn more about why we need to use our power as creators in art, illustration, and design to change minds and make an impact upon our return.
ARTIST WORKSHOPS:
We are looking for individuals that are interested in helping contribute to an atmosphere of creative camaraderie and people that are willing to be open to adventure, creating on-location and collaborating with others in real-time. As part of our mission for collaborative learning, each artist-in-residence will be asked to contribute a 45-minute to an hour long interactive workshop or demonstration, discussion topic, or presentation that introduces a piece of their personal practice, methodology or theories to the group. Please provide us with your concept (or concepts) for potential workshops, and what you'd like to emphasize during your session.
TO APPLY:
We will be reviewing applications as they are submitted and will respond within several weeks of receiving your application. If you are applying for a scholarship position, please complete the separate scholarship application alongside your residency form. We are looking forward to hearing from you!
THE SELECTION PROCESS:
After submitting your application, the Light Grey Team will receiw your combatibility with the program and reach out for a Zoom or Skype interview. The interview process is to hear more details about the program, present your workshop proposals, and ask questions about what the program entails. Accepted artists-in-residence will receive a registration invoice through our shop, and asked to confirm payment of their spot within two weeks of acceptance.
Please be thorough when submitting the details of your application as the team uses it to better understand what an applicant can bring to the group experience. Skype interviews may be scheduled with artists who may want to discuss more details than the form allows, however, it is not a necessary part of the application process. We do ask that each applicant pays special attention to the "45-minute - 1-hour workshop or presentation" and provide their best concepts for what they may share with the group.
In the past we have created workshops based on ideas that cannot be separated from their lives and practices. These have spanned the gamut including concepts like:
Design theory as it relates to their work, sustainability as a maker, finding inspiration by living, ways creatives pivot conceptually throughout their lives, ideas on inspired entrepreneurship, partnership and the bigger community, evaluating personal priorities, deep dives into the influence of art history, an analysis of hand typography, authentic auto-bio zines and books, meditation and creative wellness and many other diverse talks.
Please explain the connection of the topic suggested with your personal practice to help us understand the relationship. Topics for your workshop can be varied and we look forward to suggestions that resonate intimately with your personal practice.
OTHER REMINDERS:
Please note that the residency will contain a lot of hiking, walking, and moving about in all types of weather. The core of our residency will be happening outdoors, so please take that into consideration when applying for a spot!
* WE ARE REQUIRING THAT ALL PARTICIPANTS BE VACCINATED FOR COVID-19 FOR THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF EVERYONE *
Thanks again and please send us an email if you have any questions about the residency or accompanying programming.
Sincerely,
Lindsay Nohl, Founder Light Grey Art Lab
