PAINTING PROSE & POETRY CHALLENGE
SPIRIT OF THE HILLS FESTIVAL of the ARTS
The “PAINTING PROSE & POETRY CHALLENGE” is a new event whereby artists will be matched with SOTH writers and challenged to paint an image inspired by an author’s book.
At the Festival itself, the artists will then complete a painting (or drawing) within a certain time limit.
Festival visitors from the public will be invited to grab a refreshment; then stay to watch the creative process in progress.
Visitors will be asked to submit ballots so as to vote for their favourite art with a chance to win both the original artwork and a copy of the book from which the excerpt was taken.
The challenge will take place during SOTH’s Festival of the Arts at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, 240 College Street in Cobourg on Saturday, Oct. 26th between 10 am to 2 pm.
A maximum of six artists will be part of the challenge. If you would like to participate, please register before the Friday, September 20, 2019 deadline. Artists will be chosen on a “first come, first served” basis.
If you are interested in participating, please register. The first six artists to do so will be part of the challenge. You will be notified by Mandy Bing (the Event Coordinator) .
Mandy will then send to each of the six artists 16 excerpts of text from the author’s books.
The artist would then choose which one of the excerpts they would like to paint. Once a choice has been made, Mandy will eliminate the excerpt from the list so that it cannot be chosen by another artist.
Artists may prep their art work before the event (research, drawings, underpainting). Then finish the art on-site at the event on Saturday, Oct. 26th between 10 am and 2:00 pm.
Size: the work should be at least 18 X 24 but there is no upper size limit.
Medium: the medium can be oil, acrylic, drawing, pastel or watercolour. No matter what the medium, the piece must be completed in the four hours allotted and created in the Great Hall location before a visiting audience.
A copy of the writer’s excerpt will be displayed by each artist during the event.
While the artists are working on their pieces, visitors will be invited to purchase ballots to vote for their favourites. Tickets will be one for a loonie or three for a toonie. All proceeds will go to the Northumberland Hills Hospital.
2:00 pm will mark the end of the event challenge. Artists will stop working. A Spirit of the Hills representative will then pull a ballot from each of the artists’ jars. The person whose name is drawn will be notified that they have won both the painting and the book from which the excerpt was taken.
Set-up: you would arrive at approximately 9:30 am to set up your easel, table for materials, drop sheets, etc. Artists will be scattered throughout the room so as to encourage show visitors to walk about and view all art.
Take down: roughly 2:30 pm after the draw and presentation of painting and book to the winner.
