Lithium batteries sometimes overheat and catch fire under certain conditions such as, the battery gets damaged, dropped or exposed to excessive vibrations, or is improperly charged.
Fires that are caused by Lithium-Ion batteries produce toxic fumes that should not be inhaled.
You are not allowed check Lithium-Ion batteries in your luggage when you fly, you must carry all your Lithium-Ion batteries in your carry on.
"Bloating" or when a battery visibly expands is a sign that your battery has been damaged and should not be used any longer.
You should not throw away Lithium-Ion batteries in the trash because they can get damaged and explode in the garbage truck or waste facility.
