BHT Foundation (formerly Brother Help Thyself) is a 501(c)3 community based non-profit providing financial and other support to non-profit organizations serving the LGBTQ and HIV/AIDS communities in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. metro area.
Founded in 1978 by four gay motorcycle clubs, BHT Foundation is one of the first organizations in the United States to provide funding for LGBTQ health, cultural, and social services needs. The first fundraising drive by The Capital Area Board of Leather and Levi Motorcycle Clubs raised $4,518. BHT Foundation was formed to award funds from that grant to the Gay Men’s VD Clinic which is now known as Whitman-Walker Health; and to the Gay and Lesbian Switchboard of Washington, DC. BHT has awarded over 1,000 grants to nearly 200 distinct non-profits totaling over $3.2 million.
BHT Foundation's Board of Directors is comprised of both member clubs (who designate their representative to our board from within their membership) and elected members unaffiliated with our member clubs. Both types of members of equal privileges on our board.
Our grant season generally runs from late-June through August 31; followed by grant hearings in the early fall and then deliberations by our board through November. Grant applicants are notified in early December if they have been selected to receive a grant. And, then grant checks are presented at our annual grant reception in late January/early February depending on the weather.
BHT meets monthly on the second Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Dignity Washington, located at 721 8th Street SE in DC on Barrack's Row. Our meetings average an hour; but can go shorter or longer depending on that meeting's agenda. Apart from our meetings, board members might be asked to attend various community events to represent BHT Foundation or assist with BHT Foundation-sponsored event planning. BHT Foundation hopes to undertake a series of small fundraisers throughout the upcoming months as well throughout our region.
