    2020-2021 Student Ambassador Leadership Class Application

     

    The Mayor’s Fitness Council is looking for role models, postive influencers, leaders, idea creators, and change makers to empower their schools, peers, communities and families to lead healthier lives!

    The mission of the Mayor's Fitness Council Student Ambassador Program is to involve San Antonio youth in Mayor Nirenberg's initiative to improve the health of San Antonio.  As a student ambassador you will represent the Mayor's Fitness Council at your school campus and within your school district!

    Applicants who serve as student ambassadors must currently be enrolled in a Bexar County middle or high school.

    As a Student Ambassador, you’ll get to:

    • Attend a Student Ambassador Orientation Training;
    • Attend a series of monthly hands on trainings that promote the benefits of physical activity, healthy eating, mental wellness; peer education; service learning; advocacy and civic engagement; and participation in school wellness councils;
    • Dream It. Complete a roadmap of your school, after school, home, and neighborhood related to physical activity and nutrition;
    • Map It. Map out your plan for implementing a service project to improve nutrition and physical activity at your school campus or in your community;
    • Do It. Present before a panel of community leaders about your idea and then work to implement your service project;
    • Provide written progress reports on your project;
    • Produce videos, photos, blogs, etc. to document your success to educate others;
    • Be Recognized at the End of the Year Recognition Ceremony and showcase your service project and;
    • As an official Mayor's Fitness Council Student Ambassador you and your family will enjoy a complimentary YMCA family membership to enjoy at your nearest YMCA of Greater San Antonio location compliments of the YMCA!

    Selection Process

    Application must be submitted by Friday, May 8, 2020.  The Mayor's Fitness Council Healthy Schools Committee will select approximately 50 student ambassadors to participate in the 2020-2021 Student Ambassador Leadership Class.  Applicant selection is based on 1) quality of completed application, 2) student essay, and 3) representation from various Bexar County ISD's, Private and Charter Schools.

  • If my child is selected for this position, I understand that this will also require a high level of commitment and support from me to help to ensure the success of my child in the Mayor's Fitness Council Student Ambassador Program. I will support him/her by attending all required events and meetings and commit to the following:

    • Ensure transportation for my child to attend Orientation, Saturday Workshops, and the End of Year Recognition Celebration throughout the one and half year academic term which will run from January 2020 - May 2021.;

    • Attend occassional Saturday Workshops where Parent/Guardians are needed to attend.;
    • Communicate and check in reguarly with the campus mentor to ensure that my child is on track with their required service project.

    The Program Calendar is currently set as follows:

    •  Parent/Guardian, Campus Mentor and Student Ambassador Orientation - pick one of the following dates to attend: Tuesday, August 11, 2020 5:30 - 7:00 pm (location TBA) *This is a required event; 
    • Ambassador Health I.Q. Training - Saturday, September 5, 2020 8:30 am - 3:30 pm at the San Antonio Food Bank;
    • Dream It! Workshop - Saturday, October 10, 2020 8:30 am - 3:30 pm at the Witte Museum;
    • Panel Presentations - Saturday, November 14, 2020 at PreK4SA East Location
      Campus Teams must present together and choose what panel session to give their presentation in from the following choices below: 
      Panel Session 1: 9:00 - 11:00 am
      Panel Session 2: 11:00 am- 1:00 pm
      Panel Session 3: 1:00 - 3:00 pm;
    • Final Service Project Presentation Workshop - Saturday, April 2021  (date/time/location TBA);
    • End of Year Recognition Celebration - May 2021 (date/time/location TBA)

    All applicants must have their campus principals support to apply.

  • Campus Mentor

    All applicants must have a campus mentor identified to work with them at their school campus. A campus mentor is health champion at the school campus who is generally a teacher, coach, principal or school faculty that will check in with the student ambassador and guide/advise them throughout the required service project process. All campus mentors will receive a complimentary YMCA membership from the YMCA of Greater San Antonio for their commitment and service to San Antonio's Healthy Leaders.

  • Tips for Writing an Essay:

    • Essay must be no more than 300 words;
    • Give yourself plenty of time to write and proofread your answer to the essay question;
    • Be honest! Be original!  Be yourself! There is no wrong or right answer.  We want to know more about who you are.
