The math tutoring program is dedicated to helping middle school students improve in math at Baylor College of Medicine Academy at James D Ryan (BCMAR). BCMAR is a public magnet middle school (grades 6 - 8) associated with Baylor College of Medicine situated in the historic Third Ward, just north of UH central campus. Over sixty percent of its population is on free and reduced lunch and it is about 80 percent Black/African American and Latino/Hispanic, combined. Math courses at BCMAR include pre-advanced placement math for 6th - 7th grade and high school algebra and geometry.
Requirements
- Love of math and great at math
- Works well with students between the ages of 11 - 14
- Volunteers in Public Schools approved.
Follow the procedures to obtain approval and check with Ms. Martinez at BCMAR, (713) 942-1932, to confirm approval.
What to Expect
- Tutors will meet with students on tutor-select sessions in person, at BCMAR, to help them with math.
- Tutors will keep a notebook of notes on student progress/concerns to provide updates to the team (notebooks are provided).
- First time tutors will receive a handbook and should allow for an extra 10 - 15 minutes for an orientation.
- The school runs on an A/B block schedule. To see the same students, choose A or B dates. Mondays and Wednesdays are A days and Tuesdays and Thursdays are B days
