  • Northern Lights Wildlife Volunteer Application

  • Wildlife Care Volunteer

THESE ARE STRICTLY VOLUNTEER POSITIONS. YOU WILL NOT BE PAID, BUT YOU WILL RECEIVE ROOM AND BOARD.

NOTE: THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKING ALLOWED ANYWHERE ON OUR SITE!‌

NLWS specializes in the care of orphaned bear cubs (both Grizzly and Black Bears) and facilitates their rescue, care and release in BC. But we also are open to all BC mammals and assist in the rescue for birds of prey. You may get to care for moose, deer, foxes, squirrels, flying squirrels, woodchucks, coyotes, porcupines, otters, beavers and other BC mammal species. We never know what we will see coming in.

We also aim to participate in research projects wherever possible so you could be part of an interesting study project and gain insights on how they work.

NLWS animal care commitments range from 3 to 12 months with priority given to those that can commit a longer term. The longer the term the more involved you will be in animal care.

Working at a Wildlife Rewilding Center can be very intense at times, and you have to be 100% committed. This is not a holiday; we all work hard to help wildlife in need. With any luck, you will be working an eight-hour day, but at times it can be up to 12 hours with intensive care patients or during rescues/releases. Your job will include feeding, food preparation, cleaning, laundry and maintenance work (painting, yardwork ect) Expect to be outside in all weather conditions, the work is VERY physical.‌

In return to your commitment, you can expect the following:

    · Working with likeminded people, the team works hard, but we also aim to have a lot of fun while doing this

    · Working in amazing scenery day after day

    · Working with the amazing BC wildlife

    · Working 5 eight hour days a week with 2 days off, overtime can be banked for extra time off when possible (admin choice)

    · 12 month volunteers can book off up to 2 weeks of holidays throughout their stay at the start of their stay, no holidays in June

    · Your own room (bedding and towels are provided) and shared access (with up to 2 more people) to full bathroom and kitchen facility

    · Access to washer & dryer

    · Prepare your own breakfast & lunch (food is provided)

    · Dinner is usually with the family, but occasionally you will have to prepare your own dinner as well.

Due to time constrictions only, successful applicants will be contacted for interviews!

If you have questions in regards to volunteering, please contact Angelika at info@wildlifeshelter.com

    Please read:

This is a serious commitment to continues animal care. We rely on you to be present throughout your committed time period. Any vacation or other activity in Canada has to be scheduled before or after your volunteer time with us.

Though on average you have a 40hour week the work can include night feedings and split shifts making for long days. Time off may come in one day turns or can also come in a block after a 10day shift if an animal needs your extensive care.

Irregular working hours are the norm when caring for wildlife in need. Have you carefully considered that you can handle that for the duration of your commitment?

Though you will have a unique opportunity to work closely with Canadian wildlife, you need to realize that personal contact with the animals is VERY LIMITED and short in duration. The bulk of the work consists of such mundane tasks as feed preparation and cleaning of buckets and enclosures. Have you carefully considered if you are willing to commit to such work?

We live in a remote area of BC the next town is 17km away and can only be reached by vehicle. We have a 5000 people community, which consist largely of ranchers who live far apart. Social entertainment is limited and laws for drinking and driving are very tight. Have you given serious thought to how you would spend your time off?

Taking pictures of our animals with personal devices such as camera or phone is not permitted. We make a camera available to take pictures with that you are welcome to use. Management will screen photos and then share them with you. Please sign to accept this restriction. Can we have initial box here?

The events taking place at NLWS are confidential for a number of reasons. We therefore ask you to not share daily events on Social media or otherwise without Manager approval. Please sign to accept this. Can we have initial box here?

If accepted for this volunteer position, I agree to abide by the policies and regulations of NLWS and commit to perform my duties and commitments to the best of my ability with a strong work ethic and a high level of personal commitment.
