New York has a huge opportunity this year to lead the nation on campaign finance reform with small donor matching. The Fair Elections campaign, with a robust and aggressive field component, won language in the state budget creating a statewide public financing program, but the details, which really matter, were left to a Commission to decide by December 1.
The strength of the final program will be determined by the strength of the Fair Elections campaign, and specifically, its field operation, led by of-color community-based organizations.
The strategic partnership of a broad-based movement with allies shaping the public policy will also be critical to delivering meaningful change in New York and, in the coming years, federally and across the nation.
