We are looking for two sites to join this multi-site project this fall. This project is designed to test the effects of cover crop seeding date and rate on cereal rye biomass production and corn yield. The two cover crop seeding dates are approximate but should be targeted for immediately following soybean harvest and 2 weeks after that. The two cover crop seeding rates will be 28 lb/ac and 55 lb/ac:
Treatments (cover crop seeding date x rate combinations):
1. Early seeding (~Oct. 15) x 28 lb/ac
2. Early seeding (~Oct. 15) x 55 lb/ac
3. Late seeding (~Nov. 5) x 28 lb/ac
4. Late seeding (~Nov. 5) x 55 lb/ac
Replications: 4 replications of each of the 4 date x rate combinations (results in 16 total strips).
Previous crop (2019): soybeans
Cover crop: Cereal rye seeded in fall 2019
Cash crop (2020): corn
Seed cereal rye cover crop on target dates (to the best of your ability given weather/time constraints).
Seed cereal rye cover crop at specified seeding rates.
Terminate cover crop in accordance with your typical practice when preceding corn.
Plant and fertilize corn in accordance with your typical practice.
PFI may be able to provide in-field assistance but not guaranteed
Cover crop biomass from each strip just prior to termination in spring 2020
Soil health sampling from each strip in May/June 2020
Corn grain yield and moisture from each individual strip
We are looking for 2 sites to join this effort by conducting trials in the 2019-20 cover crop-corn cycle.
Compensation includes $550 research honorarium and up to $310 for cover crop seed used in the project.
