Beyond Babysitting: Challenges and Pathways to Strengthening Quality in Municipal Summer Day Camp Programs - Dr Alan Warner and Tineke Weld (Acadia University)
Municipal summer camps are a fantastic opportunity to help kids get wellness needs met, such as nature connection or physical activity. But camps are usually not structured to support young leaders to use new approaches consistently, specifically in terms of training and planning. The workshop reports on a couple of case studies in addressing this problem, with a specific focus on nature connection activities. Come ready to discuss your own ideas about the resources and structural changes needed to get to inspiring summer camp programs.
This session will take place at Douglas St Rec Centre with some outdoor activity included.
Nordic Walking Nova Scotia
Join Bill VanGorder from Nordic Walking NS for a practical introduction to Nordic Walking. See how to use the poles correctly and learn more about how to incorporate and/or encourage this activity in your work.
This session will start at the Glengarry Hotel with walking taking place on the nearby section of the Cobequid Trail. Equipment will be provided for all attendees.
HeartSmart Kids - Heart & Stroke
Pamela Fonseca from Heart & Stroke will be leading a training session on their revamped HeartSmart Kids resource. Co-created by and intended for First Nation youth, the resource is already in use by some educators located in Wagmatcook, Eskasoni and Potlotek to name a few. The program is focused on health literacy and those delivering are encouraged to tailor to their local context and culture.
This in-person training will demonstrate the resources available and the holistic approach taken to educating young people about health literacy and indgenous health practices.
This session will take place in the Glengarry Hotel.
Please note: these sessions will take place based on a minimum number of people registering. If we don't reach the minimum number in advance of the pre-conference some sessions may change.
