A Legacy of Inspiring Others
Miss America 1943 Jean Bartel took on the commitment of a "war-time" Miss America to heart, as she embarked on a bond-selling tour that would result in her being honored by the United States Treasury Department as the individual who had sold the most Series E War Bonds that year. Jean raised $2.5 million worth (approximately $40 million in today’s dollars), and, surprisingly, most of these twenty-five dollar bonds were sold to women.
Millions of Americans have answered the call to serve their country, and Jean Bartel was an ardent supporter of the Armed Forces. Established in Jean’s memory, the Jean Bartel Scholarship for Military Awareness is a $3,000 scholarship awarded to a qualified applicant who has demonstrated exemplary service to the men and women of our nation’s military.
